Before you find the puppy that's right for you, you need to gain an understanding of the various dog breeds that are available. There are seven standard dog breeds, along with some rare and mixed breeds. You are also going to need to get some insight concerning the characteristics of the different breeds so that you can begin to develop an idea concerning the kind of canine companion that might be right for you.

Long before human had, iPods, computers, and GPS units, we depended on dogs to help us survive. As a result of tinkering with their reproductive process, dogs have become a species more varied and diverse in abilities and physical characteristics than any other species that exists on earth today. There are dogs that weigh two pounds and there are dogs that weight 200 pounds, dog that have silky flowing coats, along with dogs that have no hair at all.

Dog breeds can be described as a cross between a personal ad and a job description. This is a breed to serve every function, from hunting, herding, protecting, and companionship. In Mexico you can find a hairless breed that was developed to server medicinal purposes as well a be a companion.

With some exceptions, your puppy's innate skills are not necessary to your survival, but don't share this knowledge with your puppy. As he gets bigger he is still going to think that his skills are in demand. And his breed drive won't let him slack off. No sheep to herd? This is not a problem. He will heard people. No poachers to drive away? Then the mail man becomes a good enough stand in. No prey to retrieve? That's fin. A tennis ball will do. One thin is for certain, and that is dogs love to work and you will never be able to force them to make a major career changes.

if you are serious about bring a puppy into your family, then you are going to need to find a suitable breed. before you go out and get a puppy you need to decide what dog breed you want and you need to know what that particular dog breed was bred to do. you need to find a dog breed that matches or complements your personality. This is the first step in getting a dog that will be able to live up to your expectations.
