Child abuse and neglect has many horrible consequences; but the worst of them is the beliefs formed by the child about himself or herself which is often quite destructive in nature. Abuse is the most penetrating and permanent communication which more often than not, conveys to the victim one or more of the following messages:

1. I caused it to happen.

2. It's my fault.

3. I do not deserve any better.

Dr Heyward Bruce Ewart, III in his new books discusses on this issue in length. He has given some incisive views on this topic.

Heyward sexual abuse by far is the most frequent maltreatment of female children. Irrespective of the fact whether the victim is very young or a teenager, she takes deep within herself all three messages above and develops negative perception about herself which is but self-destructive. She concludes that there is definitely something nasty and hateful within her which caused the older person to perform such an act upon her. She takes the entire blame unto herself.

If a female child is molested or abused early in life, she is more prone to be drawn to the subject sex; a seductive quality will exude from her until she comes to terms with it. To top it up, the victim will reflect a woundedness which is easily spotted by a predator.

Child molesters and rapists referred to as predators, have an uncanny ability to recognize easy pray. A human predator acts like a hawk that hovers around the sky until it spots a wounded animal and sweeps in for a kill. This paranormal quality coupled with the vulnerability of the victim explains why a woman who is raped once is more likely to be raped again. This is further reconfirmed by a commonly known fact that a raped girl or woman is 7 times more likely to be raped again.

If the victim cannot bear the suffering in an abusive relationship, or if there is any intervention by a protective-services agency, she will try to break free and escape though the partner will continue to chase her. However, even if she breaks up with the first relationship, she will get into another which will be worse than the first one. Her preconceived notion will continue to dominate her mind – she deserved the treatment she received.

Since domestic violence shelters offer mainly protection and little effective therapy, their clientele nearly always go back to same person or sometimes, find a more abusive than the first one. She goes into the second relationship with the preconceived perception about herself, and then the basic problems remain unresolved.

This problem can be approached to with a group therapy i.e., with other victims. This may lead her to become a real survivor and an empowered adult. However, the group leader ought to be experienced in the pervading ramifications of abuse. Unfortunately, this field is a rare specialty.
