If you are writing a speech for an upcoming occasion, and have not had much experience doing this before, you need have no qualms, whatsoever, because the task is not as daunting as it may first appear. Depending upon the occasion and the composition of your audience, you should choose an appropriate theme. With a little homework and effort, you will be on your way to preparing a first rate speech.

Choose a Theme

If you have the freedom to choose your own theme, choose one that is likely to go down well with your audience. Your first task is to compose the central message that you would like to convey, and you can then build the structure of your speech around this. For a politician, the themes could be varied, such as education, employment, healthcare, and so on. If you are in business, you might choose themes that concern competition, business growth, customer service and the like. The list is endless, and you should choose one that best serves the objective of your speech.

Gauge Audience Expectations

Make an assessment of the kind of people who are likely to be present at the event, and use a language and style that suit the audience. If you use highbrow language while speaking to, for example, younger trainees, your effort may be wasted on them. Never use words that may make it seem that you are talking down to the participants. Do not be a ‘know-it-all’ but at the same time do not be too modest, especially if you are giving an informative talk where you are an acknowledged expert.

Choose a Good Opening

Seasoned speakers are always ready with an “attention grabbing” opening for their speech. You can do some research and prepare an interesting quotation, or humorous piece, that will “break the ice”, but make sure it is also relevant to the occasion.

Encourage Action

Your audience has a common area of interest; perhaps members have assembled to hear your expert opinion about how to generate profits, or how to expand the business amidst stiff competition. Once you’ve made your points about the approach, proceed to list the actions that need to be taken to carry the endeavour through, to bring the ideas to fruition.

Summarise Effectively

Summarise all that you have said, briefly, so your audience is able to remember your important points. Write an effective closing, so your audience feels motivated, energised and “raring to go”.

Conclusion

Whether this is your first attempt at speech writing, or your earlier attempts at writing a speech were not very successful, it is possible to succeed if you invest some time in the process, and do some research, or “homework”. Do not feel daunted by the prospect, use an appropriate theme and, with a sincere effort, you are well on the way to making an effective, persuasive speech.
