You’ve finally built your dream house. Bet you can’t wait to fill it up with the finest furniture, the best appliances, and the classiest decors. You’re prepared to go all out. You only want what’s best for your home, and understandably so. After all, you’ve worked extra hard and invested heavily to make your dream a reality. Well, now it is, and this is your chance to make your decorating ideas come to life.

DIY – Do It Yourself

Some people can’t be bothered to decorate their homes. They hire expensive interior designers to do it for them. But really, when you think about it, it’s your home, for crying out loud. Why would you want to entrust the decorating of your home to a stranger who doesn’t even know your style and your taste? Won’t it be more fun just to do it yourself?

Indeed, it is. You’ve probably always had visions of what your house should look like, so you know exactly how to make it a reality. If you’ve always wanted psychedelic wall-to-wall carpeting, don’t let anybody stop you. If you want floor clocks in every room, you can get it done. Paint your walls every color of the rainbow, get a canopied bed, have floor clocks in the bathroom, and have a Japanese-inspired dining room. It’s your house. Do whatever you want to do. The only limits are in your imagination.

M ‘n’ M – Mix and Match

Of course, it’s easy to get carried away when you’re solely relying on your imagination. If you’re not careful, you might end up with a horrendous house that looks like a Thai go-go bar. Don’t let your imagination run away with you, but don’t stick to just one concept either. You want your house to be tasteful and to reflect your personality. The key is to mix and match, and if you do it right, you’ll end up with a house that’s more than fit for human habitation.

A common yet very interesting mix and match concept is the fusion of two or more design concepts. For example, think Victorian meets minimalist for, say, your living room. You can have it all done in white – white walls, white carpet, white furniture, white appliances. Before you get blinded by the whiteness, however, add in a piece de resistance or two, such as bright art deco vases or antique floor clocks. The brightness of the vases or the elegance of the floor clocks will take the attention away from all the white. It’s eye candy at its very best.

Of course, there are many design concepts to choose from, so take the time to study your options and experiment. Don’t go overboard, whether it’s with the floor clocks, the tiki torches, or the carpeting. Remember that this is a house you’re decorating, not a showroom. Whatever you decide to do or how you choose to decorate, your house should feel like home. If it doesn’t, you’ve probably done something wrong somewhere. Indeed, there’s no place like home, and only you can make yours one.
