Although they can be costly, both health and auto insurance are necessary household expenses. Despite that, there are ways that you can save some money on your premiums and have a little extra cash in your wallet.

First and foremost, one of the greatest deciding factors for any type of insurance is your choice of deductibles. By definition, an insurance deductible is the amount of covered charges that you must pay each calendar year before the insurance company will pay benefits. In short, a higher deductible will result in lower premiums. This means that in order to save money, you can speak with your agent about possibly increasing your deductible and lowering the cost of your insurance coverage. If you purchase health insurance with a higher deductible, for instance, the cost of your coverage will likely be less.

Speaking of coverage, it’s important that you consider your actual needs when choosing a plan. In fact, many find it feasible to purchase only the coverage that’s needed in order to avoid higher insurance costs. For instance, when you take out an auto loan, you are required by the lender to have full coverage on that vehicle for as long as the debt is owed. Once your automobile is paid in full and you have ownership of the title, you can speak with your insurance agent about reducing the coverage to only that which is required by law.

If you are in the market for auto insurance, you can save some money by maintaining a good driving record. Additionally, youthful drivers who are added onto your account, such as your children, may be able to reduce premiums by successfully completing an approved driver’s education course and/or maintaining a certain grade point average in school.

Last but not least, you may also be able to save some money by paying for your insurance coverage in a single lump sum payment as opposed to monthly or quarterly plans. Although it may be more difficult to pay such a large amount all at once, it may save you in the long-run.
