When you’re selling your home, the worst thing you can do is show it to prospective buyers when it is cluttered with excess stuff. You don’t have to throw away your treasured possessions, but you might want to find a way to temporarily get them out of the way so the clutter in your home doesn’t scare off potential buyers. Even if you aren’t trying to sell your home, getting the extra “stuff” you don’t use regularly out of your way can really help you get organized.

Off-site storage can be a great solution for finding something to do with those possessions that you want to keep, but that you don’t need taking up valuable space in your home on a daily basis. When you are looking into getting storage options for your excess possessions, you will need to decide between a removalist warehouse storage facility and a self-storage unit.

Factors to Consider:

Do you need access to your possessions?

If you plan to store items until you sell your current house and move into a new home, warehouse storage is likely to be the best choice. However, if you are storing inventory items for your business that you could need to access at any time, a self-storage unit will probably be the best solution for you.

What is the smallest space you can use?

It is a good idea to speak with someone at one or more warehouse or self-storage facilities about your storage needs. Ask for his or her opinion about the amount of space that you need to effectively store your possessions. Let a storage professional know the quantity and types of items you plan to store, and listen to their suggestions regarding what you are likely to need.

Keep in mind that with a warehouse storage facility, you can specify the exact amount of storage space you need. However, with a self-storage facility, you must rent space based on predetermined unit sizes. If your stuff is too large for one unit, then you will need to rent two complete units. Most self-storage facilities do offer several different sizes of units.

Choosing the Best Storage Facility:

Cost Considerations

When you know how much space you need, it will be time to start shopping around on the bet price on a storage facility. Make sure that you consider the location of different facilities when making price comparisons. If you are going to need to access your storage unit frequently, paying a little more a unit in a convenient location makes more sense than renting one several miles away just to save a small amount of money.

Understand the Terms of the Agreement

Before signing a contract with the storage facility of your choice, make sure that you read and thoroughly understand the terms of the contract. Pay very close attention to your obligations under the contract, as well as those of the owner of the storage facility.

Make note of the payment date, and familiarize yourself with the consequences of non payment. Some facilities offer a grace period for late payments, and others do not. The busiest storage facilities, which are often the best ones, are particularly strict regarding payment deadlines. Most storage facilities reserve the right to sell stored goods if payments are not made in a timely manner. The last thing you want to deal with is losing your possessions because you neglect to make a payment.

Making the Final Decision

If you need around the clock access to the items that you plan to store, a self-storage facility is going t be your best solution. To find the best option for your situation, first make decisions about your needs and the factors that you need to consider. Then, shop around until you find a convenient, affordable facility that will make a good temporary home for your prized possessions.
