What is it that makes a good kids costume? Practically, it's a costume that's both safe and appropriate for the child's age. But from the child's point of view, it's usually the latest popular movie character, famous celebrity or some other part of the "pop" culture.

When you're choosing a Halloween costume for your kids, it's always best to include them in the process. You'll sometimes need to point them in the right direction and make sure they choose something suitable, but for the most part they can decide what they want to be on their own.

If you force a particular choice on them, they probably won't enjoy it as much and will probably feel uncomfortable in it.

One of the great things about being a kid is the fact that you can enjoy playing the part of whatever costume you choose. Adults who dress up rarely have that sense of actually becoming a different person or creature. Kids imaginations are active and let them get fully into character.

And kids costumes aren't just for Halloween - they don't need a special event as an excuse. Birthday parties or other events can be just as good a reason for getting into costume.

For that matter, there's really no need for an excuse at all. I can remember spending many summer days roaring around the neighborhood in my Superman costume when I was a kid. And my daughter certainly loves getting dressed up in her Princess clothing any time of the year.

Theme parties can be particularly fun, with all the guests dressing in costumes based around a certain theme. You can even use costumes for educational purposes (just don't tell the kids that!). If they're learning about a certain era or culture, getting into period costumes can help make it a lot more meaningful for them.
