An organized vehicle makes for happy drivers and passengers. We spend a lot of time in our cars, and keeping them organized can be a real challenge. Trash can build up, and important items be easily lost. When winter comes around, bringing its own collection of tools and supplies, keeping an organized car can become even more difficult. However, it doesn't have to be hard to keep your car organized. Here are a few tips and tricks to help your car stay tidy when the cold winds blow.

1. Empty trash from your car on a regular basis. This is always important, to keep cups and papers from building into strata underfoot. However, it's even more important in the winter, when bulky coats make cars seem cramped. Keeping your car free from clutter ensures that your passengers have as much space as possible.

2. Cold weather brings snow, and snow can mean emergencies. If you have a cell phone charger in your car, be sure that's it's accessible at all times, so you'll be able to call for help if you get stuck.

3. In addition, there are a number of cold weather supplies you should keep in your car during the winter months. These include salt or de-icer, gravel for traction, a small shovel, and a window scraper. Don't just toss them in your trunk, though. Assign each item a secure place in the car that will prevent it from spilling or getting jumbled with other items.

4. Keep a spare pair of gloves in your car, for cold occasions when you forget yours. In an emergency, you'll be glad you have them. Small chemical hand warmers can be stored with the gloves.

5. A folded blanket in the back seat or trunk can be extremely useful if you get stranded and can't keep the engine running. While you probably won't need this item, knowing where it is at all times is still important. If you do find yourself in need of emergency warmth, you'll be thankful.

6. Part of keeping your car organized is keeping it running well. Before winter sets in, be sure that you've had it serviced. Included in this service should be an oil change, engine check, tire check, and radiator fill up. If your car is running smoothly, you'll be much more likely to get where you need to go.

7. Keep your maps in order. Over time, these can accumulate and take over the glove compartment. Consider exchanging them for an atlas, or keep them in an envelope or folder so that they won't explode all over the car when you open the glove compartment door.

In the winter, a properly organized, well-running car is more important than ever. Make sure your car is clean, properly supplied, and serviced before the cold weather gets here, and you won't have to worry. Breakdowns in the winter can ruin your day and slow you down. Avoiding them and being able to deal with them if they happen is just one more part of having an organized life.
