When the temperatures begin to fall, don’t let the cooler weather freeze you out. Instead, start preparing your home now for the cold winter months that lie ahead. If you’re prepared for them, those chilly evenings will leave you with a warm feeling inside.

During the winter months, snow and ice storms often lead to power outages. If this occurs, it’s important to have a reserve of canned foods that require no preparation, flashlights with plenty of batteries, bottled water and plenty of extra blankets to wrap up in at night. This is especially true if the roads are impassable, and you are stuck at home until the storm clears or the electricity is restored. It may also be a wise idea to consider an alternate heating source, which may include a generator, for those unpredictable days when electricity is scarce.

Did you know that insulation can greatly affect your home’s temperature? If your house is not properly insulated, you may see higher energy bills after causing your home’s heating system to work harder just to keep the interior temperature comfortable. If you feel that your house isn’t heating up as it should or you suspect a problem with your insulation, consider replacing it altogether. You can learn more about the latest in insulation at your local home improvement store.

Before winter arrives, it’s a good idea to clean out your home’s gutters, which are the shallow troughs located beneath the edge of your roof designed for water runoff. During the fall, leaves and other debris can cause a buildup in your gutters, which may later lead to a buildup of snow and ice during the winter months. Because both of these can weigh heavily on the structure of your home’s exterior, it’s important that the gutters not be clogged or allowed to be filled for long periods of time. Your home’s gutters are responsible for water runoff and, if damaged, could lead to leaks within your home and even mold if left un-repaired.

Last but not least, make sure that you have all of the necessary equipment for snow removal at your home and ready for use. This includes a snow shovel, salt for sprinkling on the road or path in order to melt snow and ice, gloves for keeping your hands warm outdoors and boots that do not leak. Having everything that you need ahead of time will make that first snowfall less heavy on your heart and on your budget.
