Everyone approaches aging differently, and for those who have achieved “senior citizen” status, the range of emotions can be quite overwhelming. Some seniors see their retirement years as the best of their lives; others deny that they are undergoing any major changes; and many of the elderly feel extremely insecure about their futures.

Regardless of their personal reactions to the inevitable fact of aging, people can take some responsibility for how they spend their golden years by doing what they can to remain mentally and physically fit.

Welcoming The Baby Boomers

Aging is a normal, and unavoidable, part of life, and the elderly are as entitled as everyone else to maximize every day they have. Medical advances, in fact, have meant that people are living longer than ever before. The Baby Boomer generation, born in the twenty years after World War II, is now entering retirement age, and they are an enormous political and economic force. The face of senior citizen living in the US is going to change dramatically to accommodate their wants and needs.

One of the most obvious ways in which society is changing to meet the demands of an aging population is in the wide availability and variety of senior citizen living facilities. From upscale retirement communities offering a vast choice of social, cultural, travel, and sporting opportunities to active seniors, to full-care facilities specializing in caring for the elderly victims of mental and physical disabilities, there is senior citizen living to satisfy any need.

Types Of Senior Care Housing

Senior citizen living is available to accommodate low-income elderly people, through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 202 program. Funded both as part of the HUD budget and with the rental fees it charges, Section 202 senior care housing is available for those 62 and over, or for low income families, as long as one of the family members is that age.

Private senior care housing can range in price from $20,000 to $200,000 per year, depending on the level of services a facility offers. Many senior care housing communities have medically trained staff, housekeeping and meal preparation, and transportation available for shopping, medical care visits, and social outings.

Senior care housing is becoming more and more important, as the number of retiring Baby Boomers grows, and many of those individuals want to enjoy their golden years without the responsibility of maintaining a home. And every indication is that the trend in creating senior care housing to appeal to their desires to physically active and socially involved will only grow in the coming years!

Most seniors capable of making the distinction would very likely choose the senior living centers where the staffs are actively engaged in helping them get the most out of each day.

Senior living centers should go out of their way to make both their residents and their residents’ families feel welcome and comfortable, and to eliminate any feelings that they are “prisons”. The seniors should be allowed as much independence as they are capable of handling.
