One of the sad truths of life: Most of us don’t get up in the morning excited or happy about our day at work, or the business. No, in fact it’s quite easy to get up, grumble at the dog, forget to brush our hair and end up looking rather like something the cat dragged in! Yes, more often than not, work is not something we rush to with a goofy grin everyday.

But did you know that just looking at things from a happier perspective is not only a great way to have a calmer, more enjoyable life, but it’s also great for lowering stress levels and reducing your risk for major stress-induced health problems as well? Well here are five great ways to take the step toward doing what you love, and loving what you do.

1. When you first wake up in the morning, find something, anything that makes you smile. Is it sunny out? Take a moment to note how pretty sunlight is in the morning. – Soft and gold, filtering through the trees or your curtains. Maybe it’s a bit rainy. – But listen to how pretty the rain splashing against your roof sounds! Or the way the water trickles down your windowpane. There isn’t much anything more lovely than a good rain. If weather doesn’t make you smile, then maybe your coffee, or your breakfast, or the warm, toasty shower suits you better. No matter what, just make sure you find something that makes you smile.

2. Take a moment out of your day to indulge in something you enjoy. - A little bit of time just for yourself. Finishing a chapter of that great book would be wonderful, or maybe a 5 minute break to surf the web and read some jokes or sending emails to your loved ones. Taking time to do something for yourself is a great way to boost your happiness.

3. Make a random list of things you’re grateful for. Take each point and cut them into little strips of paper. Fold the pieces of paper and place them in a big jar upon your desk. You can decorate the jar any way you want, (Wrapping it with beads and wire can be quite pretty, and simple to do!) or leave it plain. Every day, take out one strip of paper and read it. – Just to remind yourself of at least one thing in your life that you have to be grateful for. Continually add new “thank you” notes as you think of them.

4. Shove aside any little “what ifs” or worries that come to mind. Worries like these are needless and pointless and do absolutely nothing to get anything productive done. Tackle each issue head on, thinking it logically through in your mind and debunking it. Example: “What if I don’t get this promotion?” Make sure to question yourself, did you work you very hardest? If so, then tell yourself there is nothing more you can do, and take comfort in the fact that it’s out of your hands. If the answer to the question is no, try and figure out what you can do to remedy the situation, or work extra hard so that the next promotion that comes around you’ll definitely get!

5. Set yourself one small goal to accomplish each day. These little goals are simple, yet effective, as they ad up quickly and instill a sense of real pride and accomplishment. They can be anything from walking up the stairs instead of riding the elevator, taking on something you’ve been procrastinating to do in the business, working for 5 extra minutes. Nothing creates confidence like getting things done.

These tips are very helpful for making each and every day the very best it can be. Get in the mindset of joyfulness and you’ll see a world of difference in your life!
