In case a marriage is going through a difficult patch and the couple is finding it difficult to make the marriage work, then it is best to seek professional help. This can be of vital importance if there is a communication breakdown occurring between the couple.

Taking help from a professional may help in saving the marriage, which may otherwise be turning into a sinking boat. In order to save ones marriage it is advisable to approach a marriage counsellor. Marriage counsellors are trained to look into the problems faced by the couples with dispassionate eyes. They can help in ironing out the differences between the two partners and suggesting ways to both maintain and subsequently enhance the lost intimacy.

When Marriage Counsellors Can’t Help

In some instances, though, a marriage counsellor may not be able to help out the disturbed couple. Their differences and resentments may be too deep seated and they might have made up their minds to move away from each other. If the differences are irreconcilable then the couple may decide to go in for a divorce.

In such an eventuality it is best for both the parties to try and ensure that the divorce process is as painless as possible. All effort should be made to have a divorce, which is without any acrimony between the two erstwhile partners. This may not be such a simple issue, as it seems to be.

Divorce Counsellors

The very fact that the couple is moving towards divorce means that their differences are very strong. It means that they may be harbouring feelings of ill will towards each other and may find it difficult to agree on even the smallest of issues. In such a scenario they should try and enlist the help of a neutral mediator who can help them in untying the knots with the least possible unease.

As the two partners move away from each other they may not be able to find a neutral mediator amongst family and friends. This may leave them with the sole option of once again turning to professional aid. This way they might be able to enlist the services of an individual who is able to understand all the issues involved and guide them on how to break up with least possible difficulty.

Choosing a Counsellor

Choosing a divorce counsellor may be a task that is easier said than done. It is of utmost importance that the counsellor enjoys the trust of both parties. If even one of the two lacks sufficient faith in the neutrality of the counsellor then he or she may not be able to help the couple.

Most of the counsellors try to convince the couples to avoid divorce proceedings. They move forward towards divorce counselling only if all efforts fail. One of the first things to ensure about a divorce counsellor is that he or she is licensed or at least has ample experience in the given field. Here are some qualities that a Counsellor must have:

Experience

The couple must ensure that the divorce counsellor chosen by them has got sufficient experience of handling such cases. The counsellor must be trained to mediate between couples with differences. If the counsellor is a lawyer also, then it helps the matter a great deal. A counsellor who is also a lawyer can help in wading through the choppy waters of the legalities also.

Knowledge

The counsellor should have sufficient knowledge of family law and should be able to communicate the nuances of the same with clarity to both the husband and wife. The counsellor ought to be well acquainted with issues regarding children in divorce matters. He or she should be able to guide the couple on how to get along even in spite of the divorce, for the welfare of the children.

Trustworthiness

In the end all said and done, one returns to the initial point. Trustworthiness. As one moves through the divorce process, one is bound to share intimate details with the counsellor. These may be related to some embarrassing episode or the financial matter or issues related to the parenting of children. For all of this it is important to be able to trust the counsellor completely.
