Furniture can often be a subjective thing, we choose what we like (and not necessarily what others like!).

When you have considered all the normal aspects of your choice, such as style and size (taking into consideration both the room and your home) you will need to start looking at the color choice as well.

The color of your furniture needs to match the color of your home and the room you intend to place it in.

The first thing you need to consider is what kind or style of furniture you are wanting to purchase wood, leather or material. Woods come in different colors, due to it's natural color and the coating that works with it.

From there, you need to decide what color the covering material or cushions might be. In all these cases, you will need to know a few things about color to help you make the right decision.

The different names of color in the furniture world is in line with the names of color in the world of art. If you're an artist, you're at an advantage. If not, there are some simple tips that can help you.

Some of the terms you will hear interior designers and professionals in furniture talk about are primary, secondary and complementary colors.

There's an easy way to work this out, and it involves a triangle. Your primary colors always refer to red, blue and yellow. Colors like white and black are referred to as 'shading' colors, and adding them to any of these colors simply makes the shading lighter or darker. So, by labeling the corners of a triangle with these primary colors, you can begin to easily see what the rest of these terms refer to.

Firstly, between red and yellow on the triangle you can label 'orange', being a mix of these two primary colors. Between blue and yellow label green and between red and blue label violet. These are what is known as the 'secondary' colors. Secondly, complementary colors refer to those colors which are directly opposite to each other, such as blue and orange.

Blue and orange are complementary colors. This is a marvelous tip to help decide what colors to furnish with straight away.

The other terms you might hear about are 'warm' and 'cool' colors. Warm colors refer to any color that creates a focal point (such as yellow, red or orange) while cool colors obviously are the opposite (usually used by painters for the background art).

Cool colors would include green, violet and blue. You will see that this cuts the triangle in half, and immediately helps you to decide what color of furniture to choose.

Do you want the piece to be a focal point, or be in the background compared to something else? Creating too many focal points (warm colors) can make a room feel cluttered and less spacious, whereas choosing too many cool colors will make a room feel dull.

While it may be mostly up to personal tastes, these are important considerations that need to be taken into account.
