Most kids nowadays have a fetish for pets. As early as the age of four, you will find your youngster tugging on your shirt and asking over and over on whether he can get that cute little doggie in the window of one of the local pet shops. You would think that these cats and dogs are a good addition to the family because they make your children happy and give them someone to play with when mom and dad are busy with business dealings or with household chores. Recent studies however have shown that there is more to having pets than meets the eye. May it be a gold fish, a golden retriever puppy, a Siamese cat, a white hamster or an iguana; these pets could very well be your child's best teachers coaching them subconsciously with the virtues of discipline and responsibility.

If you want to teach your children the values of responsibility at such an early and ripe age, then getting them pets may be the best way to go. Before getting him one, you might want to stress that having a pet entails a lot of tasks and responsibilities that would take for him to make a conscientious effort so that he can be able to keep his pet. The act of giving them a puppy is therefore an act of relatively appointing them as designated parent or caretaker of their pet. Putting your child in charge for his pet's health and well-being like preparing for his puppy's daily meals or making sure that the dog gets a good bath each day so that he will not attract fleas, instills in him a sense of accountability, and the merits of patience, thoughtfulness, kindness and devotion. Once he gets this into his system, your child develops a pattern of reliability and sensibility in dealing with his tasks. How he handles and makes do with pet care also gives you a bird's eye view of how your child can deal with bigger things. It may seem farfetched but you could just as well base your decision on whether to get your teenager that red sports car for his graduation on his trustworthiness in caring for his childhood pet.

When inculcating responsibility, discipline is not far-off. Routine and regular pet chores like feeding the cat, cleaning the fish tank or aquarium, walking the dog trains your child to manage his time well enough to accommodate these everyday errands in his daily schedule. As your child learns to bear in mind and commits to these chores by heart, you can be rest assured that you can rely on them to perform any other task that you may additionally assign. These tasks are also great alternatives and diversions within which he can spend his spare time as compared to him endlessly watching shows on television or playing video games.

The best way that your child can learn to deal with real life situations is through experience. The caring for pets can be related to handling some very accurate life scenarios. One good instance is on how one would deal or behave towards sickness and illnesses. Pets are not invincible and they are prone to diseases as well. Early on, letting your children learn to cope up with their pet's ailments will allow them to be more mature and ready to deal with afflictions that may affect other members of the family.
