If you’re old enough to drive, you know it’s a pain in the butt to pull up to the pump and pay that $50 to drive those four hundred miles or so. What a lot of people don’t’ realize is that you can actually save a little bit on gas if you change your driving habits. You should note that these driving habits aren’t that hard to follow at all. In fact, they are actually quite simple.

Check your tire pressure

If your tires tend to be low, this can cut down your MPG drastically. It’s important that your tires have the correct PSI. To know exactly how much air your tires should have in them, you can note the number on the outside of the tire itself.

Don’t weigh down your car

Imagine having to carry something in your backpack at school. The same concept goes along with a vehicle. The more you have to carry, the more your back is going to hurt. Try to use this same situation with a car. The more the car has to carry, the more gas it’s going to need to use to power itself down the road. So if you’re carrying unnecessary items in your trunk that weigh a good 20-30 pounds, take them out immediately.

Have monthly auto check-ups

Changing the oil filters, and making sure everything is running properly is all important when it comes to gas mileage. If you’re not keeping up with your maintenance, this may cause troubles with your car’s performance. Depending on the situation, the gas mileage difference will vary. It’s also important that you get your oil changed every 4,000-5,000 miles.

Besides a few driving tips, there are other websites out there that can help you find the cheapest gas prices in your area. A good gas price checking website is gasbuddy.com. The concept is fairly simple. You pop in the location where you want to find gas prices and a whole list of gas stations along with their address and price will pop up. If you’re looking to go out and get gas, this is a great way to save a few cents per gallon. Every penny adds up, right?

Once you check out how much gas is in your area, it may be beneficial to sign up for a credit card that specializes in gas savings. You will find that with a gas credit card, you will be able to save anywhere from a percent to 10% off. These numbers may sound too good to be true but they really aren’t! What you’ll find with a lot of gas cards Is that they vary from solely gas station credit cards only to rewards on everything from gas to grocery.

If you change your driving habits just a little and you do a little research before filling up at the pump, you may see yourself saving a few bucks each fill up. These numbers of course, will add up over the year and will help you save in the long run.
