Planning a trip to Europe? Looking for low-budget accommodation? Well, possibly you have reached the right place! Far from being a discussion on recommended places to stay, I will try to make the process of selecting your hostel as easy as possible.

Firs of all, let's take a look at what to avoid. Please, close this search engine window you have already opened. I know, it's the easy way, Google will do it for us. Well, Google can do lots of things, but many times it's not the best when it comes to find the cheapest options. It is still to come the time when Google can do a search for price!

Now that you have closed the window, there are some rules I would tell you to follow. From my point of view, and after trying hundreds of hostel search engines, I take the one that Ryanair offers in the Hostels section of their web-page. In fact, they take it from the search engine of HostelWorld. A first approach to the search of cheap hostels will probably guide you to a list of recommended hostels. Normally this is a selection for the ones that pay most to get listed on the top, so many times it is not really the option you are looking for.

To sort them by price will be a good step to take. After this is done, don't get confused with the results! Yes, this hostel is telling you they offer a room for 5 euros night/person. What it does not tell you is that this applies for their 32 persons room, where you are going to be together with 32 other travelers and a shared bathroom and shower for the 32 of you. Maybe if you are young and adventurous you can enjoy that option, but even myself I would feel a bit too far from what I understand a hostel room must be for.

The important thing is simply to do not forget to select the option to get more information, to look at availability, their services, what is included within the price, which conditions apply, how the price varies depending on the day of the week or season... And specially, do look for which kind of room you are booking. The latest trend is to get extremely confusing when it comes to describe how the beds are like: single, twin, double, 2 in 1, large... and bath: en-suite, shared, with bath,with toilet, with... In the end you really don't know exactly what the room is going to be like. More than once I have ended up with two separate beds when I wanted just one for two persons. Just sit down, relax, look at their definitions of each thing, and get the option that fits best your needs.

Following with this, remember also that if you book a room with more beds than the ones you are going to use, you are normally going to be asked to pay for them, so try to fit the room to your real requirements, or look for another hostel if you can't make it with one. It will cost you planning time, but it will save valuable money.

The good thing about booking hostels online is that, different to airlines, they charge you only the 10% of the price and you give the rest when you arrive there, so it is always a good point when it comes to a possible change of plans, cancellation, etc. It is very convenient that you book some months before you go, but in case things go wrong, you won't lose a lot of money.

After all, there are many ways to book hostels online, and this is only my recommendation providing my personal experience and this is the tool I use when looking for accommodation to my customers.
