Taking care of your new ferret can sometimes be a daunting task. Although they are very intelligent animals, they are also somewhat stubborn. There are always exceptions to the rules though, so you may find one that takes to the litter box like a fish does to water. If you do, be glad, you are one of the lucky ones!

As a general rule, positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to train your pets, no matter what kind they are. It's also much more humane (and you won't have PETA hovering over your shoulder all the time!) than slapping them with a newspaper.

The main idea behind positive reinforcement is to mold your pets performance by offering incentives for good behaviour, and ignoring the bad. There are many different variations on this method, but the general idea is rewards for your new ferret.

Litter Training Your New Ferret

Litter training your ferret is a great idea if you plan on letting that little guy run around the house freely, which I recommend doing. This will give them the chance to constantly be exploring new surroundings and loving every minute of his little life.

Training your ferret to use the litter box can be a fairly tough thing to do. As I said earlier, they are stubborn creatures by nature.

First, find one spot that you will ALWAYS keep the litter box. Your ferret isn't going to spend the time to walk around and find what he's looking for if he needs to goÉ he just will.

When first starting, you may not want to keep it completely clean all the time. Leaving just a little bit of his waste behind will make sure he knows that this is his spot to do what he does. But also make sure not to keep it TOO dirty, or he may not use it at all. After he learns to use the box properly, you won't have much of an issue at all with that, you can keep it as clean as you would like to.

Once your ferret has figured out how to use the litter box properly, you can start placing small litter boxes around the house. Not only will you have to clean up less often, but he will also get the chance to play all around the house without having to worry about when he will have to go potty next.

This is a gradual process and may take you a while to master. In fact, I would even recommend getting a book on ferret training just for that reason. There are a number of them available online that you can download straight to your computer for a nominal fee. If you find yourself having a heck of a time trying to teach him how to use the litter box, then this may be the proper route for you to take. There are a few methods out there that will have him going in the right place within just a couple of days!
