Whether you are installing new cabinetry in your home or want to mix up the look of the pieces you already have, a great feature to look for is glass cabinet hardware. Whether you have wood cabinets or glass cabinets, glass cabinet hardware can add an extra air of class to your storage spaces.

The first consideration you need to make when you are going to install glass cabinet hardware is that it will go with the rest of your cabinetry. If you are considering a project that will add some new cabinets or update some old cabinets, you can choose different knobs than the staying cabinets have on them, but you do need to make sure both styles will go together and not clash.

If you are thinking of putting glass cabinet hardware on glass cabinets, you need to look carefully at the knobs to see if they were made to be installed on glass cabinets. Not all knobs will work on glass. They need to have a special buffer between the glass or metal part of the knob and the glass for the door to keep the knob from scratching or cutting into the glass over time.

Next, look for a warranty or guarantee on your glass cabinet hardware. They should be made strong enough to handle regular use, and many pieces come with guarantees that they are. You may want to steer clear of those that don't, because they may not have been made up to the same quality standards.

Now it's time to put the glass cabinet hardware on. This is something that has to be done carefully and properly if you are installing them on glass cabinet doors. You need to remove the doors from the cabinets and decide where the glass cabinet hardware will go. It should not be too close to the edge, because you run the threat of breaking the glass as you drill the initial hole and cracking the glass due to stress during normal usage. You should at least have them 1-½ inches from the edge of the glass door. Mark where you want the knobs to be and then it's time to drill the holes.

If you haven't drilled a hole in glass to put the knob in, this will be a new experience. Glass and wood are very different creatures. You need to take a little extra patience for this project.

First, make sure you have the right kind of drill bit. It should be a diamond bit that you enlist to complete this task.

You also need to think of how you will keep your drill cool while it works. You can either use a lot of lubricant or coolant to do this or put your cabinet door in a shallow dish of water (with a wood block underneath it) and drill it in the water, to keep the bit cool.

One thing to remember is you are drilling glass. Don't force it or you are going to break the glass, drill slowly and let the drill take its time to do the job. Eventually you will have a completed hole.

Attach the glass cabinet hardware and you're ready to hang the doors and enjoy.
