There are many advantages to getting your Beagle from a Beagle breeder rather than a pet shop. The biggest is that you can get answers to all kinds of questions about your puppy, the puppy’s parents and Beagle information in general. You need to ask Beagle breeders about the puppy’s health, about guarantees and if everything will be put in writing. You need to visit the Beagle breeder to see that it is a good place for dogs. Be sure to visit the kennels and meet the parents. Ask any and all questions about any aspect of Beagle information to the Beagle breeder – including if you can return the pup and any point during his or her lifetime if you can no longer care for the dog.

If you remember nothing else from this article, remember this – NEVER buy puppies from a pet store or an Internet site! They always get their puppies from one of the barbaric puppy mills in the country. Not only is this practice unnecessarily cruel, you usually wind up with sickly, mental and not-so-purebred purebreds. Because of the popularity of the Beagle, there are many Beagles suffering in puppy mills.

If you can’t go to a pet store, go to one of the many fine Beagle rescue centers that have purebred and Beagle mixes for adoption. The only reason you should buy a Beagle puppy from a Beagle breeder is if the breeder is in the local area or if you plan on showing and breeding Beagles. Beagle information sites usually don’t mention the long wait and high cost of getting a Beagle puppy. However, you are assured of a healthy, sane, purebred puppy with “tech support” from the breeder.

With great Beagle breeders, you should not just drive up, pluck a pup, hand over the cash and drive off. It should be a long process to assure not only a healthy pup, but for you to know what you are getting yourself in for. Perhaps the pups are not even born yet, and then they won’t be ready to be weaned until they are two months old. They should have their first shots and first wormings paid for by the breeder.

Great Beagle breeders will give you an extensive health guarantee, in writing (yes – you need a contract!) about the health of the puppy they are selling. It is illegal for them to misrepresent the health of any puppy they sell. But great Beagle breeders will not stop at just health – they will also socialize the pup, let the pup know what a house and home living is like and will even start housetraining them.

Beagles are not known for any particular health problems through genetic disorders. But Beagle puppies do need shots and worming, and so do their parents. The best Beagle breeder will also offer a health guarantee and will take the puppy back if your vet says the puppy has an illness. See how long this is for. The best Beagle breeders will also take the puppy back anytime in the dog’s life if disaster hits you and you are forced to give up the dog.

Also ask if the puppies will be registered with the AKC. If not, then they should be less than $1000. If you still have some doubts even after your visit, check with the agriculture department of your state to see if that kennel has ever been cited for health or business violations. The best Beagle breeders should also be a good source of Beagle information if you should have questions months down the line.
