The end of the year and the beginning of a new one is one of those times when you take a moment to look back on the year and recap where you have been. Usually we look at what troubles we have had to endure and the memories we have made. But it can be more than just a trip through memory lane. What you have gone through can be used for a very good purpose. You can make it a truly valuable process to take part in right now.

Why?

No, it is not so you get lost in the past. That would not be helpful. It is so that you can learn from what did not go as planned and to learn what you can from the different situations. This intentional course of action will ensure that you do not carry any baggage with you as you enter the New Year. As you know, baggage from the past only weighs you down and keeps you from getting the things you want out of life. Giving yourself the gift of closure is priceless and will serve you well in order to move you forward into 2008 and into new opportunities.

A way to do go through this process is by answering several questions.

1. What happened in 2007 that affected me?

2. What did I enjoy?

3. What was a hardship?

4. What do I want more of in 2008?

5. What do I want to eliminate and not repeat again?

After making this list, take the time and figure out what you learned in each circumstance. This is a very important and crucial step. In consciously acknowledging what you learned, you have moved forward in becoming aware of what brings you happiness and what makes you suffer. With this knowledge come two things. First, you will know that no matter what you went through you have at least learned something. This will bring you some peace because you already went through the circumstance but now you can say it is an experience that brought you wisdom. And secondly, and more importantly, you will have what it takes to apply what you have learned to the future. This will mean that you will know more of what brings you good in life and what will be detrimental. This awareness will obviously ensure that you do what it takes to make yourself happier and avoid what does not. Your choices will be more deliberate in accordance to the results you seek. And that is the answer to making the most of everything that happens.

So, as the year ends and the New Year begins, give yourself the gift of closure. It will make such a huge difference in whatever you choose to do. Learn from what happened last year, acknowledge its wisdom, and figure out how that will help you in the future. Move on to new opportunities with the wisdom of your past and not its baggage at your fingertips, helping you create the life you want to lead.
