Why You Should Be Eating Your Breakfast

What do you do on your typical morning? If you’re like many Americans you probably grab a quick shower, get ready in a hurry, and fly out the door in an attempt to be at work on time. If this is you, what is your morning routine missing? Breakfast. Not eating in the morning may seem trivial, but breakfast has long been regarded as one of, if not the, most important meal. Modern research done on the health benefits of eating breakfast is standing behind this, and after you’ve taken a look at what a good breakfast has to offer, you just may find yourself slowing your mornings down.

The number one reason most people avoid breakfast is because they are in a hurry, don’t have the time, and can’t afford to stop and fix something to eat. The second most common reason, however, is that many people believe that they will gain weight if they eat breakfast every morning. Not only is this completely inaccurate, but the opposite is true – several different studies have concluded that breakfast can actually help you lose weight. On average, these studies say that a person who rarely eats breakfast is about 8 pounds heavier than someone who gets some sort of meal every morning. How can this be? It all has to do with metabolism. When a person eats in the morning, they provide their body with a good source of fuel and energy to burn. This causes their metabolism to increase, which in turn causes them to be less hungry during the day and to process food eaten more efficiently. When you don’t eat, your body has to slow its metabolic rate to make up for the lack of fuel. Doing this also decreases blood sugar, so to fix both of those problems your body begins to crave sugary, fattening snacks.

Weight loss is a great benefit, but breakfast can do even more than that, actually going so far as to help reduce your risk of serious diseases. Breakfast gives you the perfect opportunity to boost your heart health, as one of the most common breakfast foods, cereal, can be ideal for cardiovascular health. In particular you need to look for cereals that are made from 100% whole wheat, as these have been proven to drastically improve heart health. While we all love sugary kids cereals, these need to be avoided. They don’t have very many healthy ingredients, aren’t made from whole wheat, and have an unhealthy concentration of calories. Studies have shown that getting whole wheat and grain products daily can reduce your risk of dying from heart failure or other cardiovascular diseases by 20%. This is a huge figure, especially when you consider that all you have to do is eat a bowl of whole wheat cereal in the morning. Do that, and then congratulate yourself for drastically reducing your likelihood for developing the number one killer of American adults. As if this weren’t enough, scientists are linking a healthy morning meal with avoiding Parkinson’s. The chance that you will develop this degenerative disease is dropped by a massive 80% by consuming a healthy breakfast every morning.

There you are – breakfast will help raise your metabolism, help you lose weight, give you more energy throughout your day, and protect you from life-threatening cardiovascular disease. Despite all of these facts, many people still choose to skip a morning meal simply because they don’t feel they have time. Doing this is unhealthy, especially considering that there are so many choices out there for breakfast foods and a meal can be made in very little time. If you absolutely can’t slow your mornings down, try one of the many healthy, portable alternatives. Fruits, such as apples, are always a good idea.
