Ross-on-Wye is located on the banks of the river Wye, towards the northern edge of the Forest of Dean.

It is well known for its market square and large number of antique shops. You also won't go thirsty in the town as it has a high number of pubs for you to frequent.

Market days are Thursday and Saturday, so if you want some extra things to look at while shopping in the town, those are the days to put in your diary.

History fans should make a point of checking out the 700 year old St Mary's church. You won't be able to miss this historic building – the tall spire is visible from practically any direction as you approach Ross-on-Wye.

Another ancient monument in the town is the Plague Cross. You can find this in St Mary's church yard where it acts as a memorial to over 300 people who died of the great plague in 1637.

Whether you choose to eat in your hotel, many of which have restaurants, or one of the other restaurants in town, you will have a surprisingly wide choice for such a small town. There's even a Tibetan and Nepalese restaurant if you want to give your taste buds a treat.

If the weather turns bad (which is always a possibility in the UK), there is an indoor golf simulator that you can use to improve your handicap. Children are catered for with their own soft play area. You can also take a cruise along the River Wye, where you can admire the scenery along the river banks.

Nearby, Symonds Yat has plenty of things to do. From working your way around the Hedge Puzzle maze to hiring a canoe so that you can paddle yourself along the River Wye.

For the more adventurous, there are plenty of outdoor sports available as well as canoeing. These include the thrills and spills of paintballing as well as horse riding, bicycle and mountain bike hire, climbing and many other adventure sports. The town of Ross-on-Wye also has its own mobile car racing simulator, where you can maybe challenge work colleagues or family members to a race.

Alternatively, you may be able to find enough time to have a relaxing break, fishing on the side of a river.

Hereford racecourse is close by, if the timing of your visit fits in with their meeting dates. Hereford also have a football club if you want to watch a match.

Close to Ross-on-Wye is Clearwell Caves. These feature the Forest of Dean's Ironing Museum and you can also treat yourself to an underground experience in the caves themselves. The caves are open from the middle of February to early November and they then reopen from the start of December until Christmas Eve, so they are almost certain to be open when you visit. It is well worth exploring the nine caverns that make up the tour of Clearwell Caves.

Almost next door to Ross-on-Wye is the well preserved Goodrich Castle. This will keep adults and children well occupied as they explore the towers and ramparts.
