Find out the truth about the Bahamas and see if it's right for you at this time. Please read our unbiased review of What You Must Know Before Entering the Bahamas.

The Bahamas is one of the world’s most popular destination points. The gorgeous beaches are the largest draw for tourism but many people love to take cruises through the islands as well. If you are going to be traveling to the Bahamas, here are a few things that you will want to keep in mind:

1. Make sure all of your documents are in order. You must have a valid passport to visit the Bahamas if you are planning to fly there. If you get to the islands by way of a cruise ship, you won’t need a valid passport until 2009.

2. Shots—most people hear horror stories of the various vaccinations they are required to get before travelling beyond the borders of the country. The good news is that there are no required vaccinations for the Bahamas. It can’t hurt to get the Tuberculosis or Malaria vaccinations, but they aren’t required for entry to the country.

3. Rules—the Bahamas follows the standard British rules of transportation. This means that driving is done on the left side of the road and navigating the roundabouts can be tricky. The driver entering the roundabout yields the right of way to the traffic coming up on his right side that is already in the roundabout. Tourists can obtain a visitor’s license for driving and can also apply for an international driver’s license.

4. Exchange Rates—the currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar which is equal to the United States’ dollar. The currency and coins are often considered good souvenirs—the most popular of these are the fifteen cent coin and the three dollar bill. Typically shops and casinos do not change currency. You will receive Bahamian change for Bahamian currency and US change for US currency. If you wish to exchange your currency you can do so at your hotel or at a local bank.

5. What to Wear—Regular casual styled summer clothing can be worn during the day, no matter what time of year it is. If you are traveling to the Bahamas between December and February, you should be sure to bring a sweater or a jacket to wear in the evenings, because the winter months do have cooler evenings than the summer months do. Most of the hotels, casinos and higher end restaurants require men to wear jackets in the evening, particularly on Grand Bahama Island and Nassau. The locals do view beachwear as tacky and inappropriate when worn anywhere but the beach.

6. Essentials—you will want to make sure you pack sun screen, suntan lotion, sun glasses, hats and visors. You can buy these products locally if you don’t want to be bothered with carting them in your suitcase, but make sure to protect yourself against the southern Pacific sun.

Going on vacation—especially to a relaxed beachy location is always fun, particularly during the cold winter months, and knowing what to expect can do wonders for your stress level while traveling!
