Probably one of the most under appreciated hardware selections are hinges. But, if you think about it, without hinges, where would we be?

Unable to open the cabinets in our kitchen or bathroom, without privacy because we couldn’t shut the doors to the rooms in our homes, and not to mention that a lot of the furnishings we have in our homes, like cedar chests, wouldn’t work without them.

So, as you can see hinges should be appreciated and if you don’t know much about them, keep reading because there are actually a ton of different kinds to choose from. For example, there are ones known as butt hinges that are used normally on cabinet doors. They are visible from the outside of the cabinet and once installed, they cannot be adjusted. Another kind available are what are known as the butterfly variety, which are used on doors and are normally lighter than other hinges. A third option is ones that are self-closing. They are used on cabinets and basically whenever the door of the cabinet gets close to the cabinet, this hinge will close it without you having to slam it shut.

These are just three of the many hinges that are available and some of the others include flush ones, those of the barrel variety, others that are concealed, some that are continuous, ones that overlay, and many, many more designed to be used in all sorts of ways.

Along with all the design options, hinges can also be crafted from a number of different materials, creating selections that are very pleasing to the eye. Like, there are ones that are made out of brass that have a polished finish. Or, you can get others that are made out of bronze that feature a hand rubbed oil finish. You can even get ones made from wrought iron that have a matte black finish and also feature an elegant scrolling type design. With all the options, it is a synch to find something to match the style of your space. If you have the traditional look going on, then the brass option would be the way to go or if you have more of a cottage feel, then the wrought iron style is perfect for you.
