Round Rugs in Home Décor

Round rugs are popular for interior home decor throughout the world. They look good in various places inside a house and people especially choose them for using in living rooms, bathrooms, and even in the basement. In many homes, people use attractive color combinations of round rugs to furnish the inside of their homes for a stylish look. While majority of people choose to buy them, some like to knit their own round rugs at home. And If you don't like to knit, you can find these in specialty shops and at flea markets and garage sales. Finding a round rug at a garage sale can be quite an adventure, since these kinds of rugs are usually rarer and not as easily available. The reason for this is that the shape of the rug makes it more of a "need" to find just that right spot, that a square or rectangular rug.

Using Round Rugs at Home

While round rugs look good at almost all places inside a home, they look particularly fit for use in the living rooms and bathrooms. In the living room or lounge, round rugs serve as a focal point for the room’s appearance. They are preferably placed at the room’s center but also in proximity to any main piece of furniture to complement it by harmony or contrast of colors. In a bathroom, a round rug also serves the purpose of keeping feet warm and dry. Some people also use round rugs in the basement, especially for covering an unfinished part of the basement’s floor.

Color Combinations for Round Rugs

The decorative effect of a round rug can be greatly enhanced by carefully selecting a combination of complementary or related colors within the same rug. A combination of complementary (opposite) colors in a round rug would include green against red, orange against blue, and yellow against violet. One of these opposites can be chosen as the dominant or foreground color and its complementary in the background for a pronounced effect of colors. Using related colors like red with orange-red or blue with greenish-blue is a second way of making a stylish display of colors in a round rug. Whether or not to use a brightly colored combination in a round rug mainly depends on the room’s overall look. For a busy place, a complacent effect can be induced by choosing cool colors for a round rug. For a more quiet and uniform interior, vibrant colors may liven up the place.

Making One’s Own Round Rug

Some women, who love knitting, choose to make their own round rug, giving themselves all the freedom in choosing the rug’s color pattern and decorative design. This can be done by means of heavy knitting needles and a fairly thick yarn. A number of different color or shade combinations can be included in the rug’s design by knitting a closed loop or ‘band’ around which other bands are made in a concentric style. The completed bands are finally assembled by sewing to make the round rug of one’s choice.
