Pretending is incredibly important for children, especially those going through some form of turmoil in their lives. Pretending is the mind’s best way to engage the creativity and inventive spirit that most kids have. By imagining a world or a far off place away from it all, kids can escape their realities and can develop healthy, natural coping mechanisms that will help them throughout their lives with stress management.

Role-Playing

The importance of role-playing in children is incredible. Children are very likely to “make-believe” and may even concoct an imaginary friend or two. This is perfectly healthy and, in fact, it may lead to the formation of theories and ideas in the mind. This helps to improve the child’s thinking skills and works on parts of the brain that exercise thinking, reasoning, communication, and sequencing events. As children create during their playtime, they develop storytelling skills and are able to produce timetables and sequences of events.

Role-playing has a tremendous part to play in this. Not only does the art of role-playing establish creativity and character-building skills, but it also incorporates planning skills. As the child creates the world in his or her mind, he or she plans the world as imagined and sets up various scenarios using this plan. Role-playing also encourages the promotion of rules and guidelines, as kids who role-play typically have a certain way in which things in the imaginary world should work.

Role-playing is also important in the establishment of the roles. If children are role-playing as operating a restaurant (hey, I did it!), they will need to delegate roles. Someone will need to be the chef, the server, the host or hostess, and so on. This delegation of roles is critical in the establishment of organization techniques and rules. Items and objects are also organized in this way, providing hours of entertainment as the children cook the imaginary food and serve the pretend irritated customers.

Skills Learned from Pretend Play

Along with the fun your children will have by role-playing or pretend playing, kids also develop a series of skills that they may not even realize. Skills that involve problem solving and compromise can be learned through pretend play, as the establishment of roles within a context can call upon different problems. When someone burns the food in the imaginary restaurant, for example, somebody will need to put out the fire and somebody will need to tell the make-believe customer that their order has been set ablaze.

Create an Environment for Play

As a parent, it is your responsibility to make playtime fun and to create an area in which kids can use their imagination. Provide plenty of items, like hats or clothing items for dress-up, which will encourage kids to use their minds to create. Dollhouses or simple cardboard boxes make great imaginary realms for kids to get started in. Talk to your kids about pretend play, too, and ask to be introduced into their secret realm. Try not to butt in, though, as once your children are working in their fantasy restaurant, they won’t want to come out until the last meal has been served.
