Goals – we all make them. Goals to lose weight, start a business, be a better wife, mother, friend. Some people only set goals on the first day of the year. And some refuse to set them at all. But, the truth is, those who don’t set goals or don’t take them seriously, will never rise to the level of those who do.

Let’s be real. Sometimes we achieve our goals and sometimes we don’t. But the truth is simply setting them is the first step to ensuring success in anything we set out to do. Chances are you won’t lose twenty pounds without first deciding how you’re going to do it. It’s the same in business. If there’s something specific you want to achieve or attain, laying out a goal or two is a good idea. Here’s why:

1. Creates a Target to Aim For. You can’t tell a friend to meet you in New York City and expect to find each other. You need to set an exact location to meet, such as in front of the Empire State Building or at the Café Mona Lisa on Bleecker Street. Without an exact destination, you could wander around the city for days and never connect with your friend.

In the same way, you can’t get to exactly where you want to go with your business without a specific place you want to end up.

2. Allows You to Establish Your Priorities. Knowing where you want to end up makes you more aware of what’s important to you. Now you can decide what you may need to give up or what will be required of you in order to achieve that particular goal.

3. Helps You Concentrate Your Efforts and Your Time. Setting a goal helps you better manage your day-to-day activities. Now that you know what the target is, you are able to focus your time and energy on the things that need to be done. If your main goal is to increase your customer base by fifty percent, you can focus a large portion of your time on advertising or marketing. If your goal is to start a website, your efforts will need to be spent on learning all about web-site building and creating or finding content to put on your site.

4. The Motivation Factor. Scientific research proves that just the act of setting a goal motivates you to achieve it. The mind is a powerful tool and deep down, most of us enjoy a good challenge. Knowing you have an end to shoot for is often enough to keep you going until the end. However, this is only true with realistic goals. If your goal is to lose fifty pounds in one month and by week three you’re only down ten pounds, you will grow frustrated and probably head right for the snack cupboard. Set goals that are challenging but also possible.

5. Gives You a Sense of Accomplishment. There is little that can compare to the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that comes with achieving a goal. Be sure to reward yourself for a job well-done when you do hit that bulls-eye.

Being a goal setter is not only smart, it’s necessary to ensuring your success. And as a work at home mom, success is probably one of your biggest goals. See? You’ve set one already! Now it’s time to ask yourself how you will achieve it.
