There's a natural desire to get organized when you're getting ready to move. You want to start fresh in your new home. You don't want to just transfer your currently overstuffed closets and drawers to your new home. Many people want to completely organize before they begin packing for their move. Others don't want to organize anything, and just wait until they get to their new home. In fact, the best way to get organized during a move is to do some things before the move and some things after, rather than one or the other. Here are some tips on creating an organized move.

Don't Move Junk - Anything that should get taken to the junk yard should be taken there before you move. Packing things that are falling apart or are in a condition where you couldn't sell or give them away only wastes your time and energy, as well as wastes space on your removalist's truck.

Sell and Give Away Low Value Items Before You Move – If you have items of low to moderate value that you no longer want, but are in good condition, they should be taken care of before you move. If you want to make a bit of extra money, having a yard sale a few weeks before you move is a great way to do that. If you would rather give them away, offer your friends and family first shot at picking what they want. Give them until a certain date to come by, then donate the rest to a charity.

Sell High Value Items After You Move – If you have moderate to high value items that you want to get rid of, you should sell them to a reputable shop dealing with such items, or on an online auction site. Consider what times of year your items may sell at a higher price. An antique flowered teapot that you never liked may be something that will get a good price around Easter rather than in the winter, for example. Use that to your advantage by waiting until after you move to sell those items.

Clothes Should be Organized Before and After - When getting ready to move, go through your family's closets quickly and remove items that you know no longer fit or are hopelessly outdated. Sell them at your yard sale if you're having one, or give them away. Once you move into your new home, take some time to organize more thoroughly.

Organize Toys After - If you've ever tried to get a child, especially a young one, to give up a toy, you'll know why after moving is the best time to organize toys. Box everything up, but only let them open one box a day at the new house. You'll easily be able to see what toys they really miss and play with. Anything they don't play with can be hidden away in a box. Whatever they haven't asked about it in a month or so they most likely don't even remember having. The items left in the box can then safely be given to charity.

Doing a bit of organizing before your moving day, as well as a bit after you move, will help you have a more organized life all around.
