Wildlife stock photographs can be very sellable. Nicely composed photographs of nature are in very high demand not just by advertisers and editorials but by people that want to have pleasing photos as well!

To take good wildlife stock, be sure to be prepared. Being prepared when taking wildlife photos will save you lots of trouble. Be sure to have a tripod, extra lenses, UV filters, cleaning kits, batteries, and the camera! You don’t want to be twenty miles away from the road and run out of a battery! This is not a pleasing moment.

It is always good to have a telephoto and a wide angle lens. The telephoto lens would be great for catching close pictures of animals that are hard to get close to. Most animals don’t want to be close to you and will run away when you’re not even that close to them. When I tried taking pictures of donkeys they didn’t even let me get close enough to take a medium close up.

A wide angle lens in wildlife photography is great when taking pictures of landscapes. This will make the scene look bigger and can be used very effectively.

A polarizing lens is also a great tool to have when shooting the wild. It will make your blue sky’s much bluer and professional looking. It’ll also reduce reflections from the water if you take lots of photographs of water.

When taking wildlife photography ,always plan ahead! Don’t simply go into the wild saying “I’m going to take wildlife photos and submit them to stock photo agencies!”. Planning ahead will make for much more better stock photos that actually can be sold. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that just because the photos are in the wild that they’ll look good.

Location is still very important when taking pictures in the wild. I’ve been to a lot of “wild” locations where I was unable to take many good photographs. Scout your wild locations before and be sure that it has the potential for some good stock photographs.

Also, don’t simply take wildlife photographs during the day. Night photos of the wild can be very interesting and unique. I have seen lots of pictures of alligators in ponds during the day and such. However, when I saw a photo of an alligator in a swamp at night with its eyes glowing I knew that picture was the best. Night photos of the wild can show a part of the wild that most people miss. The night is when the predatory animals come out to play.

Shooting at night, however, does require even more care especially if you plan to sell the photos. You should defiantly have a flash in handy. Using long exposures in night ca make for very blurry photos if your subject is moving around. Get good at taking wildlife photos in the day before you try to take night photographs.

When taking pictures in the wild try to temporarily specialize on something. For example, concentrate on flowers or birds. Don’t try to take pictures of everything at the same time. After getting good coverage of the flowers, then move onto the birds. Then the pond.
