One of the most popular home businesses today is that of maintaining a website to promote other people's products. You can have quite a profitable business in this area, depending on the products that you sell or promote, without having to do anything more than promote your website. The biggest benefit is you don't need to ship the products and you don't have to maintain any inventory of products. That is done for you by the companies whose products you choose to promote. This makes it so easy that someone who has never run a business before will quickly learn how to operate one of these sites.

Here's how it works. Most of the time you contract with a company that already has a website promoting their own products, and they in turn provide you with a "mirror" site of theirs set up with your own codes and URL. You are responsible for promoting the site, but you will not be handling the shipping or maintain any inventory. With the site they set up for you, you get paid when someone clicks on your site and purchases a product. This is a perfect solution for someone who has a busy lifestyle and doesn't want to be tied down to a desk. You don't have to sit at your computer waiting for someone to buy something because it will all be automated for you, including the installation of credit card links. The only thing you will have to do is promote your site so that you will have a steady flow of visitors in order to ensure constant traffic and sales. With the special code assigned to you which will be built into your "mirror" site, you will receive a commission from those who purchase products from your site.

A second way to market products is through your own personal or business website on which you display links and banners from multiple companies with whom you have agreed to be an affiliate. Just enter "affiliate marketing" into your search engine and you will be very encouraged by the thousands of companies looking for what you have to offer. In exchange for posting the other companies' banners on your site, they will pay you for a click-through that creates a sale. These programs that you would display on your own website are usually not as profitable as a "mirror" site as described above unless you generate a great deal of traffic. On the other hand, some companies whose banners you may choose to promote on your own business or personal site may pay significant commissions, so you will definitely want to keep this option available. If you have the time to promote your site, you may generate enough traffic to make it worthwhile.

Promotion is the key issue with any website whether it is a "mirror" site or having your own site and displaying multiple affiliate programs on it. The amount of money you will make is directly related to how much time you spend promoting your site and how visible your site is. You will want to research ways to make your own site or your "mirror" site highly visible and allow you enough visitors to give you a reasonable income. How much you make depends on your target audience and your promotion efforts.

Of course, you can always increase your success by maintaining both a "mirror" site for specific products and your own personal or business site for other affiliate programs, links and banners. This would also be a good way to leverage your efforts.
