If you have never been camping before then your first task is to get yourself some essential camping gear. Buying new gear can be a costly exercise and if you do not have very deep pockets, or if you are on a tight budget, you might want to consider used camping gear instead.

Just as with anything that you buy in used condition, you need to be sure that your used camping gear meets the basic requirements or still functions properly. Buying used gear is also simpler that buying new gear, as you are more inclined not to let the price tag affect your judgment. However just like buying any used gear, choose the wrong one and you more often than not have to kiss your money good-bye. Some Advantages

It goes without saying that the first obvious advantage is the price. If you know where to look, you will probably save yourself hundreds of dollars for very good quality camping gear once they become used. The fact is that many people who get themselves all geared up for camping will only actually go camping only a few times before they decide that it is just not their thing and end up selling their gear. Some of this gear is high priced and of high quality and if you cannot bargain the price down, at least you would have yourself some very high quality equipment at a fraction of the original costs.

If one of your kids is in the Scouts Club and is going on his/hers first camping trip, getting used camping gear can be really worth it or if you are going on your first camping trip and are not really sure of what to get, buying used equipment at a much lower price tag can sometimes be very wise. In the event that you really enjoy camping and see yourself doing it for years to come, then maybe it would be the time to get your self some really good new camping gear.

Some Disadvantages

Some people are quite fussy and will never buy anything used primarily because of hygiene or inferior quality. Just remember that a lot of people will decide to sell off their camping gear for lots of different reasons. Some used camping gear could be unwanted gifts or maybe not up to the quality that the seller had hoped for when they made the original purchase. So it definitely pays to ask as many question as possible before you buy the equipment. You can avoid spending a lot of money by buying used camping gear but you can also bring home items that are totally useless.

If you are just starting out, it is wise not to spend a lot of money at first until you know what you are doing. One way to minimize your risks is to research the camping gear items online and know what to look for before you approach the seller.
