If the DIY bug has bitten you, you may want to think twice before tackling a big remodeling project in your home. Even if you have decided to go with a professional, there are a few things that are just waiting to trip you up. Here are some tips to help you avoid some of the most common remodeling mistakes.

1. Be realistic. Sure, it looks easy enough on television, but unless you are completely comfortable wielding power tools and knocking out walls and you have previous experience, leave it to the professionals. You can look at this way, would you let a friend pull out your teeth if they didn’t go to dental school? Don’t do something to your house that will reduce its value or require an expensive professional fix.

2. Take the time to plan ahead. When it comes to remodeling, if something bad can happen, it usually will. Plan your choices for your new fixtures, appliances and cabinets carefully. Make sure that you have a back up plan in case the ones you want are not available. This will help reduce scrambling at the last minute and ensure that you have a cohesive design at the end of the process.

3. Stick with the classics. While we all tend to want the latest and greatest, it doesn’t always work in home remodeling projects. Stay away from fads that will be quickly outdated and go for classic designs that will only get better with age. Remember avocado kitchens? They sure didn’t last, did they?

4. Skimping on quality. Go with high quality appliances, such as those made by Thermador, Wolfe or Viking. They do cost a little more, but they are absolutely worth every penny. The same is true for cabinetry. If you can’t find a design you like, don’t settle. Contact a cabinet maker to have them create your own custom design. Custom touches add more value to a home, especially when they are done well. Your house should be a reflection of your personality and this will allow you to truly express yourself.

5. Consult with a professional designer. Unless you have a lot of experience in handling design flow and color, you may want to contact a professional interior designer if you are planning any major changes. They will be able to help you spot trouble areas and colors that may look right on a swatch but will be disastrous in your kitchen.

6. Avoid scheduling trauma. Unlike a bathroom remodel, when you usually have another one that you can use, a large kitchen remodel usually means that you will not have full use of your kitchen for a few weeks. You will need to schedule your kitchen remodel so that you aren’t eating out for weeks on end. It can get pretty stressful when you simply want a glass of water in the middle of the night, so plan ahead and schedule a remodel when you’ll be on vacation or when you have a secondary plan in place.

Remember to follow your dream but to be realistic, follow your budget, and don’t skip on quality. Even if the DIY bug has hit, finding someone who is a remodeling specialist will increase your chances of having all of the tips above followed. Making your home go from ordinary to extraordinary.
