Teens are too old to be babysat, but they still need your parental guidance. You have to know what they are up to and who their friends are. If you think that you have no problem with your teens because they are glued to the computer all day, you better beware. There's online mischief you'll never know about, unless you have your video security extended to their rooms.

Teens and the Dangers Lurking in the Net

Young people are spending more time on their PCs. First, they are onto games, but later on they might stumble onto pornographic or gambling sites. Before you know it, your teens will be getting deeply involved in immoral activities and might be meeting unsavory characters online. Without video security, you can't catch what's streaming on their computer screens, and you'll never be able to nip the habit or the danger in the bud.

Teens can get information and they can seek answers to questions they are afraid to ask their parents. But the danger lurking here are the false information available to lure teens to sex and illegal drugs. They also meet dubious friends online in chat rooms, and sometimes meet their online friends for an eyeball. As a parent you also have to educate your children on the dangers lurking in the Internet, not just rely on video security and online filters.

It's understandable that you can't always be with your teenagers. You got a 9-6 job Mondays to Fridays and they have to be in school. The best thing you can do to keep them safe is to give the following advice:

* They shouldn't be meeting people they met online.

* If they have to meet their new friend, let them bring along their friends, not just one or two.

* Let them inform you where they are going and what time they are supposed to be home.

* Don't let them meet their new online friends in unfamiliar territory.

* Warn them not to give away personal information - home telephone numbers, credit card numbers, and their mobile phone numbers.

* Let them inform the person they are meeting that you know about the date and the place they are going to meet.

* Warn them that pictures don't tell a complete story about the person.

* Ask your teens that they meet the person in a public place where there are lots of other people and video security.

If your teens judge your interference troublesome, have a heart-to-heart talk with them and explain that you are always after their happiness and safety. Cite examples of unfortunate events that happened to young people - you can get several from newspapers and online news. If you can have the chance to meet the new friend, get a background check. It's better to be nosey than sorry.

Other Safety Measures

Perhaps your wired kids and teens will resist the order to place all computers in a designated family room. But this is the next best thing you can do to ensure you can keep an eye on them. With other family members around like video security, your teens will have to knock off some online activities like looking up hate literature, how to make bombs and other dangerous information.

One perfect recipe to keep your children in line is to let them know you're always there for them. Hugging them a lot more often may be cheesy, but they actually love it and they can feel you really mean it when you say you love them. They'll understand why you have made sure that your home video security does not stop at the main door.
