When you are looking at getting a new mobile phone you have two main options, you can either opt for a pay as you go phone, or you might want to choose one of the many contract mobile phones out there. The main reason people choose contract phones is because you normally get a free phone, some of which are not even available on pay as you go. But does this really justify locking yourself into a contract?

A contract is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you spend time choosing the right contract for you. However some people would be much better suited using a pay as you go phone.

Contract Mobile Phones

A contract mobile phone is where you sign a contract with the mobile phone company agreeing to stay with them for the length of your contract and pay them at least a minimum payment. This system is very useful if you want to keep your phone number for a long time, as it is easily and quickly transferred to a new handset.

If you like being able to change your phone number easily then you should not choose a contract phone, as you would have to wait until the contract is over to change your number. The contract phone will normally help you to keep track of how much you are spending, as you normally know in advance how much your bill will be. However if you go over your allocated free minutes then you will have to pay extra.

A contract phone is only available to people over the age of eighteen, and they will also be subject to credit checks.

It is important to note that you are bound by the terms of the contract, unless the contract states that you are allowed to terminate the contract should you not be satisfied then you will have to stick with them no matter what happens.

Pay As You Go Mobile Phones

These phones are useful to people that like to be able to change their phone number at the drop of a hat. You also only pay for this service when you use it, if you run out of money then you simply can’t use your phone. You’re not tied into any contract, and can change your phone whenever you want. These phones are especially popular with students who don’t want the burden of monthly payments.

Anybody can buy a pay as you go phone, there are not normally any age restrictions, and there are no credit checks as you are paying up front.

So which is better? Well there’s no right or wrong answer. You might want to try a pay as you go phone on a particular network and then change to a contract if you find out that you enjoy their service.

It’s easy to find cheap pay as you go mobiles, and cheap mobile phone contract deals on the Internet.
