If you own a home business, you will want to be able to go on vacation for a week or two or be able to attend to a family crisis if one arises. But with your own business, you have to be sure that you are taking precautions to keep your business going while you are away, otherwise you might lose business or customers while you are gone.

When you are working for someone at a traditional business, the business is in the hands of someone else, and you will find that it will still be there when you get back. You can take a leave of absence or a vacation, if your boss approves it, and you do not have to worry about the business itself. Your boss and others in the business will take care of that. You may have work that piles up when you are away, and you might have to do some catching up when you get back, but because someone else owns the business, it will keep running while you are away.

When you own your own business, especially a home based business, going away for a week for vacation is much harder. If you have someone on your payroll or a partner, it might be easier, but if you are running a business out of your home without employees or a partner, there are going to be things that you should think about and plan for before taking time off.

First of all, how can you make sure that the business runs while you are gone? There are several things you can do. If you have only a few clients, you can let them know personally that you will not be around for a week. A lot of clients will appreciate this and will actually like that you personally notified them. If you have more clients, you can use a mass email or an automatic email responder to let them know that you will be out of the office, giving them your expected return date.

The key is to let people know beforehand. Otherwise if a potential customer or an existing client tries to contact you and you are on vacation, you might lose the chance to gain future business from them. So be sure that you have an auto responder on your email that lets everyone know that you are gone and when you will be back so they can expect an email when you return. If you want them to have a phone contact for you, set the message to allow people to know this information as well.

The main thing to remember when taking time away from your home based business is that you have to be sure you are keeping clients informed at all times. This projects a sense of professionalism that clients appreciate. So no matter how often you have to be away from the business, your customers will always know when they can expect you back. By always notifying them in a professional manner and keeping them informed, you can ensure that you do not lose any clients for your home business while you are away.
