One often encounters stories these days about the rising cost of health care. Common hospital visits and surgical procedures that once were payable with cash can now cost as much as a new automobile. The problem continues to worsen, as the cost of health care is increasing at a rate that is several times that of inflation. While the cost of health care for humans is frequently a topic in the media, few people realize that the cost of health care for pets is increasing at a similar rate. The same medical advances that are helping people live longer are now available for pets - at a price.

One potential answer to the rapidly increasing cost of medical care for pets is to purchase pet insurance. As with health insurance for humans, protection for pets pays for a portion of the expense of many common and uncommon treatments for illness or injury. Health insurance for animals has been around for several decades, but has only recently started to become popular with pet owners. The rising cost of health care is almost certainly the primary reason.

In the past, veterinary science generally involved a lot of guesswork, as pets are unable to offer useful descriptions of their health problems. Current medicine makes it possible for vets to perform CAT or MRI scans on ill or injured pets. Although these modern technologies are a huge help in diagnosing problems, the costs of performing them can frequently cost $1000 or more. Pet insurance can help with that in reducing out of pocket costs for the owner of the animal. Having insurance also helps make health care decisions easier. Having an insurance policy in place could permit a beloved pet to receive treatment or surgery that might otherwise be regarded as too expensive by their owner.

The price of pet insurance can vary tremendously, depending on the type of pet. Smaller animals have a tendency to be less expensive to cover than bigger ones. The yearly cost of insuring a dog or a cat normally runs in the neighborhood of $200 to $500. Preexisting conditions are regularly not covered, so it may be in your best interests to begin insuring your pet while they are young. Many insurance policies also have a waiting period of 30 days or so from the date of purchase until the time the company will pay for treatment. Insurance policies include deductibles, but will normally cover 80%-90% of the insurance company's allowed fees for specific procedures.

Presently, some 3% of all pet owners have policies for their pets, but as the price of health care continues to rise for animals, more people are likely to buy policies to keep the costs manageable. Having to pay $400 annually to insure a family cat or dog may strike some people an outrageous expense, though such premiums are small when compared to the price of a $2500 procedure. For a lot of pet owners, the cost is virtually irrelevant, as the comfort and companionship offered by a pet more than justifies the price.
