Anybody who has experienced chronic pain in the knee will tell you that they are willing to do absolutely anything just to ease the excruciating pain. This condition, which is commonly known as chronic patellofemoral syndrome, is actually caused by the deterioration of the cartilage just beneath the kneecap.

You will know that you are suffering from this problem if you experience pain inside your knee especially when you are climbing stairs, running, jumping or sometimes, when simply sitting for a prolonged time.

Is Surgery The Key?

The most common treatment option for this condition is athroscopic surgery, in which a device is inserted inside the knee to identify the problem area and repair it. According to statistics, over 650,000 individuals in the US undergo such surgery, which costs about US$5,000, in hopes of finally getting relief from the agonizing knee pains.

Finland's ORTON Research Institute of Helsinki invited 56 participants to a study that aimed to determine the effectiveness of athroscopic surgery vis-à-vis an exercise program to treat chronic patellofemoral syndrome. The first group was treated with surgery and a two-month exercise program, while the other group only received an exercise regimen during the entire study.

Results of the research showed that after nine months, there was really not much difference between the results of the group who had surgery and the one that only received exercise as treatment. Members of both groups showed improvement and diminished pain in the knees.

If you are going to look into the findings more closely, people who underwent surgery had to sacrifice a lot because they needed to spend a lot of time recuperating after such knee surgery. Whereas, the people who just performed regular exercise routines did not have to give up their work and so much of their time.

Get Rid Of Your Excess Weight

Excess weight can actually exacerbate your problem. Give your knees a break and start losing some weight. The additional pounds are actually making things harder for your knees. One way to lose weight is by eating healthy. Also, drink lots of water and stay away from fattening foods such as fried foods, processed foods and sugar-rich desserts and treats.

Give Your Knees Some Time To Rest

Make sure that before you perform a strenuous activity, you give your knees some time to warm up. Many people think that pushing their knees to the limit will help in relieving pain in the future. Although building your muscles is essential in strengthening your bones, performing strenuous activities everyday might further damage your cartilage. Instead, take it easy and be sure to perform stretching and warming up activities before doing your exercise program.

One Step At A Time

The best way to approach strength training and exercise is by doing it one step at a time. Do not attempt to do hard stuff when you are just starting out. This will hurt your knees even more because they are not ready and strong to face extreme stress.

Pay Attention To Your Posture

From now on, you have to pay attention to how you perform things. Make sure that you know how to correctly lift, bend and even stand up. Knowing the correct way of doing things will help lessen stress on your problematic knee. Furthermore, proper posture can also prevent worsening of your condition.

Pain Management Is Important

In order for chronic patellofemoral syndrome to be bearable, you need to find ways to alleviate the pain. There are many pain medications available in the market; however, frequent use of such drugs might have adverse effects, such as stomach ulcer.

You can always rely on alternative medication to help with your pain. Know what herbs and plants can help ease inflammation and minor pains. There are also some supplements that are helpful in relieving pain.
