Sliding and folding doors used to be all the rage. Whether they were a divider between rooms in the house or a set of glass sliding doors that served as the exit to the backyard, these door styles were large and in charge. But over the years, we got lazy. More and more homes reverted to the typical doors, and just added more windows to homes to cover for the lack of open door space.

Eventually, those who realized they have a home made for entertaining also realized that a typical back door is not enough to do the job. Think of all the people trying to get in and out of various areas during a social event. Then think of the food, drink, and all the other things that have to move from in and out to make sure everyone has what he or she need during the party. There needs to be more flexibility in opening doors, a chance to open up a larger space and a way to make separate rooms, or the inside and the outside, seem like one.

So a move was made back to the old sliding and folding doors for reclaiming control of space in the house for the following reasons:

Space savings – When you pull on the door knob of a regular door and open it up, there is a large piece of wood sticking into one part of the room. That's just the way it is. You can't carry the door away by its door knob and get it out of the floor space. It will just be there. Sliding and folding doors on the other hand, will not take up much of your room space. Pull on the door knob of a sliding or folding door and it will either slide back into a pocket in the wall or fold into itself and take up a compact space in the room.

Flexibility of room definition - If you want to adjoin a number of rooms in your house during a party or other family gathering, it's not that easy with traditional doors. No matter how much you push it back, there is still only a small door-sized space to let you go from one side to the other, with a door and door knob in the walkway. With folding or sliding doors, on the other hand, you can push the door back into the pocket, or fold it up, and make a smooth flow between the spaces. Additionally, since folding or sliding doors can be created to your specifications, they can be wider than traditional doors, and even be created where you can keep pushing that door knob and they will fold completely back, opening the entire room, and not just a small doorway space.

Aesthetic –In addition to being very functional doors, folding and sliding doors can also be an attractive addition to a room. Glass sliding doors are essentially a massive window with a door knob and will allow a lot of extra light into the room. Some folding doors are made in themes, so when shut. They can add a beautiful effect to one wall in the space.
