Unlike other restrictive procedures, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding does not permanently change the anatomy of the abdomen or small intestines. It is possible to make it a reversible procedure and it does not produce any risk of severe nutritional deficiencies. Based on these facts Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding may be considered a safer operation compare to the gastric bypass or malabsorptive procedures.

However, weight loss induced by Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding is lower. Weight-related problems such as type II diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma, and hypertension have improved with LAGB, but the number remains less that of gastric bypass procedures.

While some research has documented weight loss equal to RYGBP with fewer complications, other studies have had disappointing outcomes. Some research documents a substantial number of patients who have needed re-operation for long-term complications of the adjustable band (such as for erosions, port problems, and slippage, or inadequate weight loss). In addition, conversion of a failed Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding to another bariatric procedure can be technically more difficult and associated with other complications than with a first time operation.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Advantages may include:

• Significant improvements in cholesterol, with a boost in HDL levels
• 47.9% of type 2 diabetes cases are resolved post operation
• band can be adjusted to increase or decrease restriction via an access port
• 70.8% of hypertension cases are improved
• Patients tend to lose roughly 47% of their excess weight
• This procedure can be reversed
• Food passes through the digestive tract in the typical order, allowing it to be absorbed fully by the body

Risks of a lap band procedure may include the following:

• Band may move or slip
• The port may leak or twist, requiring an operation to correct the problem.
• Band could erode into the stomach wall
• Dumping syndrome, used as a warning mechanism, does not occur
• Weight loss occurs slower than that following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery

What is the description of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding?

The lap band procedure is an entirely restrictive surgical procedure in which a band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This band divides the stomach into two parts: one small and one larger portion. When the stomach gets divided into smaller parts, most patients will likely feel full faster.

In general, surgery for weight loss is only considered as an option reserved for seriously obese people (people who have a body mass index greater than 40) or obese people with other serious health problems like diabetes or heart disease. Surgery is only considered once dietary and medical treatments have failed.

It is vitally important that you thoroughly research this procedure and know what you are opting to go under. Surgeries can impact Your life for the short term and the long term. They also have many benefits that have been documented through research and clinical studies. Get armed with that information so you may weigh the options available to you.

Take your time finding someone you can trust, and feel comfortable with, to perform this procedure for you. Make sure it’s a highly qualified health professional with expertise in the specialty you are interested in.
