Hymenoplasty is a medical procedure that has initiated controversy. It is a type of "re-virginization" that is typically in the Middle East and Latin America. Concerned about how this is being marketed, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, voiced concern about its questionable ethical repercussions. Although the group has not stated how they view this, the concern is that due to an effort to improve sex lives, surgeons wont be able to share the proper information with their patients adequately because of the lack of literature available.

A lot people seek to do this hymenoplasty procedure to appease cultural, religious, and societal beliefs. Women can seek it out prior to their wedding to ensure their sexual lives do not become the talk in the town. If the surgery goes as planned, the hymen will tear and cause pain and blood loss. Religious folks and feminists believe that this is a form of lying and female genital mutilation- no matter who is right or wrong, it is a procedure that has no basis. The name hymenoplasty comes from the Greek god of marriage, Hymen and has signified virginity since the beginning of time. It is widely accepted that the hymen may be ruptured by a lack of sexual activity, such as horse back riding, dancing, and athletics. At one time, a bride's hymen that was still intact was the sole way to tell of her chastity and the paternity of her children.

In the past midwives have been known to disguise a broken hymen through sewing it up, traditionally with a needle and thread, at times using material such as membranes from sheep, goats and other animals.

Vaginal surgery is currently all the rage, with women creating their vagina and surrounding areas to meet their needs, or their lovers’ needs. Surgeons report that they do a minimum of 200 surgeries a month. It is a reason for some to celebrate, but most surgeons call the hymenoplasty a ridiculous procedure, due mainly to the fact that it doesn't make a woman a virgin again.

Hymen repair, hymen restoration surgery, or hymenoplasty is typically done at the request of someone who wants the surgery for cultural, ethnic, or religious reasons. Many surgeons do not perform hymenoplasty surgery on a woman who has undergone childbirth.

The hymenoplasty procedure is done with local anesthesic. While tissue dissection to keep small blood vessels from bleeding, the parts that were torn are removed. This allows it to grow back together with stitches.

Then the edges are brought together to reform the "ring" as it was before relations, an accident, etc. It is made tiny enough, so when initial sexual relations occur, it will "tear" again.
