A Business card is one of the most important and cost-effective marketing tools a business can have, especially if you’re just starting out. But all too often it's a missed opportunity to make a great impression. A powerful and well-designed business card can effectively promote your business.

Here are five tips for businesspeople that make their own business cards. Apply these and you’ll be well on your way to having a card that is noticeably appealing and an effective marketing tool.

Tip #1: Font Size

A good guideline is to use a type size no smaller than 7-8 point. The company name on your business card usually looks good at about 12-15 point. Your name can be a little smaller; 9 point. Yes, you can get more information on your business card with a smaller font. But, your card will look cluttered. So, by using a font no smaller than 7-point your card won’t be cluttered and people won’t need a magnifying glass in order to read your business card.

Tip #2: Use of Color

You'd be surprised what a little splash of color could do for your business cards. Always use colors that complement one another. Too many colors will detract from the content of your card. And make sure you have enough contrast between the background and text so that it is easy to read. Here’s a hint: red is considered visually appealing in a business card. It also stands out better than other colors. So make a difference, spice up your business cards.

Tip #3: Keep it Simple

Use only the information that's necessary for someone to know. Your name, your company, the address, what you do, and why they should use you should be enough. But don't skimp on your contact information; you want to be easy to reach. You want an appealing business card that looks professional.

Tip #4: Distribute Your Cards

"Use it or lose it." Carry a supply of business cards with you at all times. Having a box full of business cards just sitting there in your office collecting dust isn’t going to get you anywhere. You need to give them out at every opportunity. Don't hesitate to give out several at a time. Always encourage people to pass the extra cards on to their friends or business associates who could possible use your services. This can often result in a referral.

Tip #5: Be Remembered

Use these tips and design a card that will get someone's attention and at the same time look businesslike and appealing. Always leave someone with a card that looks great, feels great and clearly defines what your business does. You and your card won't become a faint memory and soon be forgotten.

With a little planning and thoughtful consideration you can have a business card that will draw rave reviews and future clients. Remember, you don't need to be a nuclear scientist to come up with a good business card.
