Writing an essay isn't as hard as it may sound. In fact, there are a few basic guidelines that if you follow them then your essay will practically write itself.

What is an essay? An essay is the collection of information and your ideas on a particular subject. Most usually the subject is one assigned to a high school or college student to write about, such as a country, or an author. If by merry happenstance you are given the option to write about any subject of your particular choosing then writing your essay may be even an easier task to undertake. It is always easier to write about a subject that you have an interest and some knowledge in. Here are the guidelines that will help breeze through your essay.

First you have to define the purpose of the essay to be able to get down to the nitty gritty of the subject you are writing about. Is it an argumentative essay in which you have to try to persuade your reader to see things from your perspective? Or is the purpose of the essay to explain how to do something, such as painting a house? Perhaps the essay is to enlighten and educate the reader about a person, place, or thing? Whatever the purpose is, once you have it defined then you can move on to the actual brainstorming for the specific idea and item you are going to do the essay about.

Now you organize your ideas that you have been coming up with while brainstorming the particular subject. Write these particular ideas down on paper and organize them into a basic outline. Once you get them into a basic outline then you are ready to move on to fleshing out the basic outline into the essay required by either the teacher or college professor who assigned this specific task to you.

To organize an outline for the essay use a diagram. You can make the diagram whatever shape suits your fancy just so long as it can be set up with the necessary amount of space and lines to hold the information in the appropriate sections. Put your main information and ideas in each section or on each line and put them into some cohesive order. Once you have the basic information down then you can move on to getting the thesis statement.

A thesis statement has two parts. The first part is about the main topic. Say your topic is about Native American cultures, and you have chosen to specifically write about the Cherokee people. That would be the main topic. The second part of the thesis is high points of the essay. The main ideas and information about the subject.

Now we get down to the really good part, fleshing out the essay! This is the easiest part. First write the title of the essay and a brief introduction about the subject. Then you get the the body of the essay. Using the information diagram you have constructed you can write an essay that can move your audience; make them want to know about the rich heritage of the people you are writing about. Give them a glimpse into an entirely different world than the one they move in everyday. Tell about your audience about the richness of a cultures spiritual beliefs, or the amazing skill at crafting their tools, clothing, etc.

Now, write your conclusion. Touch up any last minute misspellings and your ready to turn in your essay.
