If you are selling your home, you may have told the buyer or the real estate agent that you would fix certain problem areas before moving out. Leave yourself plenty of time to properly complete each task. Even if you are renting, make sure the apartment is exactly as it was when you moved in so you don't end up losing any of your security deposit. Don't forget to include these projects in your moving budget if you have one. If you have to hire professional help, it is likely to be more expensive, but may be worth it.

Cleaning. Although you may think you keep your home pretty clean, you might be surprised at what lurks behind the sofa and under the wardrobe. Get a head start on the cleaning before moving day by moving furniture and cleaning out cabinets. Make sure you have all of the cleaning supplies you will need and include this cost in your moving budget. If you can afford it, a cleaning company might be worth the extra expense if it saves you valuable time. Professional cleaners can drastically reduce the time it takes to get your property back to mint condition and if you rent, it might just guarantee you get your security deposit back.

Additional insurance. Although your moving company will probably provide insurance, the standard plan may not be enough to replace your valuables. Especially fragile items such as porcelain and glass can break easily. If have several items that are in danger of breaking you might want to consider purchasing additional insurance. Also, insurance payments are subject to taxes, so you might not actually receive the full amount of the standard rate. Consider the replacement value of your belongings and decide if additional insurance is right for you.

Getting to your new home. If you are hiring a moving company, decide what kind of transportation you will be using to get to your new home. You will most likely be taking several items with you personally, especially if you are moving to another state or country. Make sure your choice of transportation has adequate room for your luggage. Build additional transportation expenses into your moving budget. Set aside money for additional expenses such as hotels, meals, and extra baggage charges.

Keys and utilities. Make sure you have arranged how you will be collecting your new keys before you set off. It is best to have the keys before the day you move if possible. Also make sure the power and water will be on when you arrive. If the utilities are off when you arrive, it could take days to set up appointments and meet technicians.
