South Africa Driving Tips:

Generally speaking, South Africa has an excellent infrastructure. As with all
countries, roads differ from region to region, however. In South Africa, you’ll find that most main routes are tarred and of good quality. However, as you drive into the countryside, you’re more likely to encounter potholes and poorly surfaced roads.

Speed limits are set according to road types:

National Highways/Urban Freeways/Major RoutesMaximum Speed:120km/ph
Secondary Rural RoadsMaximum Speed:100km/ph
Built-up AreasMaximum Speed:60km/ph

Many of the country’s national roads are toll roads. Make sure to check the toll fees before you leave for your destination and have your cash or credit card ready to pay.

Road Safety in South Africa:

· In South Africa it is customary to drive on the left-hand side of the road and to over-take on the right-hand side.

· It is compulsory for all passengers to wear seat belts.

· It is illegal to drive while using a mobile phone (except hands free models).

· Care should be taken when driving on rural roads, as many are not fenced, meaning animals are free to roam. This makes night driving particularly hazardous. Always take extra care on roads of this type and look out for road signs depicting a leaping antelope.
