The Greek island of Kos is is well worth exploring with car hire. The reason? Well, there are lots of reasons why renting a car in Kos makes sense. The abundance of attractive backdrops and scenery is just one. Boasting a fascinating culture and history as well as a fabulous climate, visitors to Kos will always find a reason to fall in love with the island. The great thing about hiring a car in Kos is that you can discover the island’s charms at a pace that suits you. Breakfast at the beach, lunch in the hills and dinner in the bright lights of the capital are just some of the options open to you. Moreover, Kos’s public transport system can’t take you to the places that your own set of wheels can. Think about it, there’s nothing worse than standing in the midday sunshine wondering whether the local bus will decide to turn up! The following is a handy guide to the island and its best features worth discovering with car hire.

Kos Airport Mini Guide:

Kos Airport is situated 26km southwest of Kos Town. The airport is served by a number of international airlines including Aegean Airlines, Air Berlin and Olympic Airlines. Kos is the third biggest island of the Dodecanese archipelago after Rhodes and Karpathos.

Things To See/Do in Kos:
Kos Town is quite a compact little city but offers much in the way of things to see and do. The best way to see the sights of the city is probably on foot. This way you’re guaranteed to encounter lesser-known attractions as well as the obvious tourist draws. Impressive structures such as the wonderfully medieval Knights of St John Castle are guaranteed to catch your eye, as are the crumbling ruins of the ancient Roman buildings. The narrow cobbled winding streets are a pleasure to explore and offer welcome cool from the blazing sunshine.

Eating Out in Kos:

Kos is a well-developed tourist destination, meaning eating out is guaranteed to be a home-from-home experience. To get more of an authentic experience, it’s always good to sample the local cuisine however. Being an island, seafood is definitely the dish of the day. In Kos, traditional favourites include shrimp salad and fried squid. Other local specialities worth sampling include: traditional Greek Meze and Souvlaki.

Day Trips/Events in Kos:
Let Kos Town act as a base from which to explore the picturesque villages of Mount Dikeos. Situated on the slopes of the impressive mountain, the villages exude old-fashioned character and charm. Zipari, Asfendion, Agios Georgios, Agios Dimitrios, Zia and Pyli are just some of the picturesque towns to choose from.

Kos has an events calendar to match its healthy appetite for fun. July’s Hippocrateia Festival is perhaps the liveliest of all of Kos’s festivals. For a whole month, the streets of Kos come to life with concerts, plays and traditional and modern theatre shows. The fun doesn’t stop in summer however; Kos’s vibrant Winter Festival in March sees the town come to life with film projections and art exhibitions.
