Nature lovers need look no further than Knysna for a lush, picturesque vacation spot. Knysna is often described as a paradise and once you have laid eyes on the lush forests, golden beaches and tranquil lakes you will easily understand why it is often considered to be one of the crowning jewels of the Western Cape.

Knysna can be found right in the heart of the Garden Route, nestled along the banks of a lagoon. Here, visitors can soak up the beauty of sweeping mountains, sparkling lakes and warm beaches as well as a veritable array of outdoor adventure activities.

In town, there are numerous flea-markets, craft shops and lovely cafes, waiting to be explored and all offering the same small town hospitality and charm for which Knysna has come to be known. The accommodations in the local area are known to be visitor focused and provide all of the amenities you could want in a perfect vacation destination.

Visitors will find that Knysna is home to a number of unique and wonderful natural attractions. The only forest elephant in all of South Africa can be found in Knysna as well as the Pansy shell and a unique seahorse. In addition, there are large populations of forest birds, waterfowl, whales and dolphins, so be sure to bring along your camera and binoculars.

While in Knysna visitors are able to take advantage of a number of different attractions and activities. The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, the last steam passenger train in operation in Southern Africa, departs from Knysna each morning; transporting passengers through some of the most beautiful scenery in South Africa as the train travels to George and back to Knysna. This is the perfect way to spend a relaxing day as well as glimpse some of the beautiful local scenery.

The Addo Elephant Park is an attraction which certainly should not be missed. The original park was begun in 1931 during a time when less than one dozen elephants remained in the local area. Today, the conversation of the sanctuary has resulted in the park providing a home to some 450 elephants as well as nearly 300 Cape buffalo as well as numerous other animals. Be sure to bring along comfortable walking shoes, a camera and binoculars to make the most of your time in this lovely and unique park, which offers hiking trails as well as guided game viewing tours.

While you are in the Knysna area, you may also wish to stop by Cango Caves, one of the greatest natural wonders in the world. These massive caverns and unique limestone formations will certainly provide plenty of delight. Visitors can take advantage of guided tours which are offered on a daily basis.

The first Marine National Park in South Africa, Tsitsikamma National Park, offers an unspoiled glimpse into the beauty of the local area. Here, ancient rivers find their way into the breakers of the Indian Ocean and the high forest forms a veritable carpet to the seashore.

The temperate climate, fine array of restaurants, accommodations and pleasurable activities make Knysna the ideal vacation destination.
