With car hire, the sunshine island of Tenerife can only get better. The following is a guide to the best Tenerife day-trips.

Tenerife Mini Guide:

Tenerife South Airport is situated in the Granadilla de Abona region, situated 60km south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife-the island capital. The airport offers a number of services and facilities including bars, restaurants and cafés, as well as a bank, post office and pharmacy. Tenerife South Airport can be reached by road via the Highway Tenerife 1.

Things To See/Do in Tenerife:

The Spanish holiday island of Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, a cluster of islands, created some 20 million years ago by Mount Teide’s volcanic activity. Today Mount Teide is still one of the island’s biggest tourist attractions and can be reached most easily by cable car.

Apart from the impressive Mount Teide, Tenerife offers something for everyone. Why not grab a map, hire a car and head out to explore the island’s beautiful valleys and national parks?

Must-sees include National Park of Las Canadas, a volcanic landscape which was used as the setting for the movie Planet of the Apes. Heading west, Los Gigantes cliffs offer stunning rugged sea views, while the north of the island is a great location to stop off for a hike at the Orotava Valley. Pretty fishing villages are also worth a visit; those of special note include Garachico and La Oratava, located to the north of the island. Golf is a popular activity on the island, with Tenerife offering some world-class golf courses and favourable sunshine. Courses of particular note include Amarilla Bay Golf Course to the South and Buenavista Golf, designed by Severiano Ballesteros and located along the picturesque ‘Isla Baja’ coastline.

A round up of the island’s attractions wouldn’t be complete without mentioning its glorious beaches, including Playa de la Teresitas and the Cesar Manrique Maritime Park.

Eating Out/Nightlife/Accommodation:

Thrift travellers will be delighted to learn that eating out in Tenerife is cheap, with many restaurants catering for British and continental tourists on a budget. If however, you wish to sample the local specialities, try puchero canario, a hearty stew, papas arrugadas potatoes and the tasty red and green mojo sauces.

The best restaurants on the island are to be found on the outskirts, so it’s well worth hiring a car if you’re looking for something a little bit special. El Monasterio, at Los Realeois, set in a converted monastery is one such atmospheric establishment, while Mesón El Drago at Tequste offers Canarian fine dining and spectacular views.

The holiday resorts of Tenerife offer a buzzing nightlife, with pubs, karaoke bars and discos on offer to keep everyone entertained. La Laguna, situated near Santa Cruz is a lively spot, filled with bars and live music.

Tenerife is packed with well-established resorts, offering accommodation to suit every budget and requirement. If money is no object and you’re looking for a unique location, check into Parador de Canadas del Teide, which is situated in the volcanic park, with room rates starting at €120 per night. Meanwhile, tourists on a budget may prefer something a little more practical and low key like The Hotel Colón Rambla which is a three star establishment, set around a pool, and just two minutes walk from the port and ten minutes from Playa de las Teresitas.
