When Bangkok was established in1782, the center of the town was the Grand Palace area. For two centuries Khao San Road, which is 20 minutes' walk from the Palace, remained a quiet residential area for the locals. How did the tranquil road turn out to be a Mecca for travelers? On the brink of Thailand's economic boom in 1982, the Thai Government issued its policy to commemorate Bangkok's bicen- tennial anniversary and celebrate the Buddhist calendar's lucky year "2525", by launching festive ceremonies in Bangkok to bring in tourist dollars. Tourists poured in from around the world, causing Bangkok's hotels to overflow with bookings. The most spectacular festivities were performed in the Grand Palace. Some backpac- kers, unable to get an overpriced room, successfully convinced local residents on Khao San Road to rent out vacant rooms in their houses, reasoning that, in return, the guest house owners could earn some extra income and it was convenient for them to travel to their destinations. The guest house business generated more profits than any amateur entrepreneur ever expected. Before long, more guesthouses, restaurants and souvenir shops sprouted along the road in full bloom.

Hanging out on KhaoSanRoad

Means waiting. And there'sone thing that everyone does while they wait: sit in cafes and cheap restaurants and food shops to spend an entire day eating a meal and successive snacks. The range of eating places in the Khao San Road area is staggering. There are every kind of restaurant from cheap noodle shops and food stalls, to expensive fondu restaurants. The quality is consistent, however. To exist on the road, the food has got to be good. See our list of Khao San's eating places, and let us know of other places you have found with the link on the bottom of the page.

KaoSarn Road

• For most backpackers and budget tourists, Kaosarn Road is the first stop upon arrival. With its numerous guesthouses, hostels, inns, it has become a truly multicultural place at any time of the day or night. There are lots of guesthouses with prices ranging from 150 to 2,000 baht (higher for a/c rooms). For most guesthouses you don't need reservations, you just have to come with your luggage.

• Kaosarn Road is a shopper's paradise offering anything from the latest designer clothes to some of the most exquisite handicrafts. It has long been known as a bargain hunter's shoppers, and Thailand has always been known as a country that offers good shopping. It offers high quality, and a wide variety goods at bargain prices. If you are looking for a very cheap accommodation this should be the place. The market always start from morning until mid night.

• If you look for cheap and practical transportation to other parts of the country this should be the place. Plus everything from food to bars to massages to shopping is really cheap here. This is a market road and an evening hangout.

• It was fun to watch and talk to the many vendors: young girls selling roses In fact, sham-bowed rock, paper, scissors, for a rose and won, much to the dismay of the vender; old ladies hawking souvenirs; and other people selling all kinds of movies, music and Jewelry, everyone haggling for the best price. You have to see this place to believe it.

• Kaosarn Road serving more than 100 of travel agencies and hotels; hotel distribution and services businesses; leading travel agencies, an airline market intelligence company, a leading international provider of long-haul air travel and travel product consolidator; Travel port, a provider of online global corporate travel management solutions. Include Airfare, Lodging, Package travel, VISA application service all over the world.

For these reasons, that is why this area is famous for its back-packer and lower income tourist accommodations. The famous place here is Kaosarn Road. This road is popular for back-packer tourists because it offers cheap guesthouses and inexpensive items. This road has been popular for decades. Word-of-mouth from tourists has made it no wonder that Kaosarn Road has become so widely well known as a back-packer haven the world around.

Well, let's tell the truth: it is interesting to visit Kaosarn road once in your life.
