It has been said that diamonds are forever but it is known that synthetic diamonds are more affordable. Synthetic diamonds have an increasing demand in the marketplace. The look a like diamond plays a logical role when dressing to the occasion does not require the traditional formal wear for the status quo, associated with the more important social circles.

Through modern artisanship and advanced technology, the synthetic diamond has all the radiance and sparkle in appearance that the authentic diamond posses. New technology is consistently improving the methods of creating these precious gems, transforming the highly sought after colorless diamond into an affordable keepsake.

In our younger years as we anticipated the first promissory ring, we all gathered to perform the true test in authenticating the true value of the diamond. In expectation, we watched as a corner of the diamond promissory ring was scraped across the flat surface of the mirror to inspect its cut.

Those were the old days. Today, synthetic diamonds can no longer be trusted to show its demeanor in such simple ways. Improved technology has made it increasing difficult even for the trained eye to determine the synthetic diamond from its worthy authentic counterpart. Many times over, the proof of authenticity has been left to the jewelry labs certification of authenticity.

Jewelry laboratories have developed synthetic materials that can take on many of the same qualities as the natural diamond. Specialized jewelry manufactories have the technology to simulate the natural production of a diamond. Glass and resins coupled with high heat and pressure can be melted down and molded into sparkling diamond look-a-likes that have the same hardness and appeal as the natural diamond itself.

Which leaves us to ask; how are synthetic diamonds made?

DeBeers Diamond Research Laboratory is responsible for producing synthetically grown diamonds to as large as 11 carats. Most synthetic diamonds are usually always kept within a total carat weight of 1 to 1.5 to keep with the appeal of a larger marketplace economically.

There are currently two methods of synthetic recreation that have been adopted by the industry in creating synthetic diamonds. The first and most favorable technique in creating synthetic diamonds is a patented process known as (HPHT) High Pressure High Temperature.

HPHT, also known as high pressure/high temperature, refers to a process simulation that naturally occurs deep within the layers of the earth. By taking carbons and trace minerals then placing them into a controlled chamber of equivalent pressure under extreme heat, scientists and gemstone laboratories have been successfully replicating the natural diamond from a diamond sliver or wafer and diamond powder residues.

The other known method uses the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process. The CVD process involves creating an environment for carbon atoms as a gas to migrate onto a diamond wafer in crystalline formation as layers.

Both the HDHT and CVD synthetic diamond growth methods were originally developed for the purpose of industrial quality substitutes. Even though, cultured gemstone quality diamonds are currently intensively studied and successfully produced during its development stages, economically it has been to cost demanding to produce on a commercial scale for the retail marketplace.

These laboratory grown diamonds, also known as cultured diamonds, and the GIA has proposed market guidelines to make it mandatory to provide full disclosure to the consumer as to the origin of the diamond.
