Have you ever wanted to pick up the guitar and start strumming your favorite songs but procrastinated? What about admiring musicians who are performing on stage?

Perhaps you would have even asked yourself: "How can I be like them?" Well, the first thing you got to do is to take action and learn the guitar.

First things first, there are many challenges that a beginner guitar player will face. One of the most common issues facing the novice guitarist is to be able to sieve through an overwhelming load of resources online to learn the guitar. On many occasions, the available online guitar lessons are not suitable or too difficult to understand for the beginner.

It is important that beginner guitarists do not rush into learning the guitar too quickly. One of the most common mistakes that novice guitarists commit is that they jump straight into learning how to play their favorite songs. These guitar players suffer at a later stage because they have not built the foundations of their guitar playing on a firm ground.

Tuning the guitar should be the first thing that a beginner guitarist should learn. It is very important that your guitar is sounding correctly before starting your practice. Otherwise, whatever correct techniques or notes that you play will simply sound wrong. Another reason that a beginner guitarist should be playing a correctly tuned guitar is that it is crucial for their early ear development.

Beginner guitarists should also learn and understand what they are playing on the guitar. To do this, the most basic knowledge of the guitar notes must be learnt. Starting from the open strings (EBGDAE 1st string – 6th string), every note of the fretboard can then be derived. Learning the open strings may seem like a chore, but it will pay off in near future.

The next most important thing that beginners should learn is the names and uses of different parts of the guitar. This is of particular importance because many lessons online teach guitar by referring to the different parts of the guitar. By understanding your instrument and how the different parts work, a beginner guitarist would also be able to progress at a faster pace.

Warming up your fingers before playing the guitar is a must if you want to avoid repetitive strain injury (RSI) to your fingers. Very often, guitarists suffer from hand injuries when they play the guitar for long periods of time without resting. To avoid these problems, 5 minutes of warm-ups before starting your practice would get your fingers geared up for playing the guitar. If you experience any form of sharp pain in your fingers during playing, stop immediately before you aggravate the injury.

Finally, to really improve on your guitar playing skills, you need to PRACTICE. It is best to set aside time to practice the guitar everyday even if it is just for 15 minutes. Research had shown those constant short practices everydays are more effective than sitting down for a length of 5 hours once per week to practice. This is because the human mind and body needs time to adapt and learn to new knowledge. Hence, the key to faster progress in your guitar playing skills is to constantly practice your instrument. May the joy of learning the guitar be with you!
